Probably a dumb question, but.....
Is the purpose of fitting a second battery to provide a permanent power source which is running even when the ignition is off?
What are its most common uses?
I am a Land Rover Novice but am rapidly getting the bug!

The main advantage is that you can run lights/radios/fridge/etc off the secondary, it can get pretty flat, but you can always start the car as the primary is not touched and ready to start the car, once the primary is recharged, the auxilary is then charged.
If you have lights/fridge etc running of the main battery, it does not take long for it to get flat enough that the D3 will not start.
