Seized Aircon Pump
Last night, just as I was leaving work, there was a squeal, some grating noises and then just a normal engine sound.
I thought maybe some road litter had been caught in a belt and then freed itself. But, as I went to pull away, I realised there was no power steering and the alternator / battery light was also on. A quick check revealed a lack of main drive belt.
Anyway, the car was dropped at the dealers this morning by those very nice RAC people and I've just had a call to say the aircon pump has seized and one of the tensioners is broken and obviously the belt.
Is this unusual? Anyone know how much an aircon pump costs or if there is an alternative to full replacement and how long / much it's likely to take / cost?
ThanksD4 XS MY12 Galway

A/C pumps can have front bearing problems, they usally whine for a few 1000 miles.
Seizing is not that common, but not unheard of, was yours making whining noises beforehand, it goes away if you press the econ button, and then back again if you press auto on the climate controls.
A belt is around £15, a pully tensioner will be around £30, a recon A/C pump is likely to be £200+ . . a main dealer will charge a good 3-4 hours labour + regassing etc, so it won't be cheap Never get mad - get even !!

Thanks for the reply.
I've been quoted £1200!!! Seems a little on the high side - even for a main dealer!
But they may have been quoting for a new compressor. Can they / will they get / use recon ones easily enough?D4 XS MY12 Galway

A dealer may want to 'sell' a new one, (can't imagne why )
but you could get a recon, they are readily available, and then get a independant to do the job, that will save you quite a lot.
It's not a particulary difficult job, so any good competant mechanic ought to be able to do.Never get mad - get even !!

Thanks - a bit better than £1200! Was that with a recon pump, or new do you know?
Either way, I think I've got some discussions to have.D4 XS MY12 Galway

The same happened to me 2 months ago. The pump seized and the pulley shaft sheared followed by the fan belt coming off, pretty inconvenient really as I was in a remote Scottish glen at the time!. It was fixed under warranty by a dealer but they told me it would have cost £700

I'm being told the compressor is £567, the belt is £100, the tensioner £65 - all + VAT.
The genuine belt is about 20 quid I think - mine was replaced with the cambelt 3 months ago. The tensioner is approx £40 inc VAT. Your dealer must have a 'special' price list Previously:

Thanks ridgeback - and for all your pm help too.
Dealer has now clarified:
Belt: £14.50
Tensioners: £34 & £22
All + VAT. Apparently, £100 was actually for all of these! Something to do with a new computer system that doesn't work very well!
Still after £467 + V for compressor as an exchange. (£567 - £100 px) Recon ones are on 'back order' so can't order one of those.
£30 for gas.
4.5 hrs for pump / tensioners etc.
1.0 hr for gas.
Total of the above seems to be £1216 inc VAT, special price to me: £1280! Seem to be heading in the wrong direction at the moment!D4 XS MY12 Galway
