Shielding around tailshaft

What is the purpose of the shielding covering the tailshaft???

I was driving along a track through some scrub today and a branch flicked up and dented this stupid shielding. Crying or Very sad

I had to get under the car and un-dent it as it was rubbing on the tailshaft and making an horrendous noise. Shocked Evil or Very Mad

Would it be innapropriate to remove said shielding??

tailshaft=driveshaft= long cylindrical device connected via universal joints, providing drive to rear.

I can provide pictures of this if necessary.

Presumably to stop big branches from hitting the driveshaft, potentially damaging the CV perhaps........ Confused
If you didn't have the shield there, what damage would have been done to the shaft/joints...?

Mine did this on the Salisbury event earlier in the year. Drove home expecting the rear diff to explode at any minute!

I think it protects the prop shaft joints from heat from the exhaust.

I think you are talking about the heat shield between the tailshaft ( that's the long cylindrical thingy) and the exhaust (fat hot thing that makes you say ouch when you touch it) Shocked
I suppose if you are stationary one side of the tail shaft could get hot and cause a deformation of said cylindrical thingy. Question

I found it in the GTR.

It's heat shielding to protect the fuel tank!! Shocked

I think it's probably superfluous, but I'll have a look at it before doing removing. I'll put the car up on ramps on the weekend and either fix it or remove it.

Jamo,

The trip I did with the Melbourne boys I punched this same heatsheild with a branch and crumpled it up but didn't squash it to touch the tail shaft.

Try to straighten it out and leave it in place.
