short trips Advice please guys.......

Hi Guys,

Looking for a bit of advice please guys.......

I have an Oct 2015 D4 commercial, loaded with extras and with rear seats fitted. 5yr service plan and 33k miles on it. It has never put a foot wrong (touch wood), does everything I want from a car and more and is by far and away the best car I’ve ever had!

However, we have recently moved house and I am now 2 miles away from my place of work. The car isn’t getting a chance to get warmed up Mon-Fri, but still gets a decent run at the weekend.

I’m concerned that these short trips are going to have a detrimental effect on the engine and result in some serious repairs, which has got me thinking about selling it and looking for something Petrol powered? I don’t want to sell and can’t actually think of anything Petrol powered that I would want to replace it with, but I also don’t want to keep it if the results are inevitable.

What do you all think? Am I being over cautious or sensible???

Thanks for your thoughts

Nick

Hi Nick

How about a remote for the FBH and fire it up 1/2 hr or so before you leave, that will warm it up ok for you, i think you would be ok with keeping the car, it doesent matter what car you have it will still be the same but as always its your decision.

Thumbs Up OJ

Buy a bike and carrier. Drive 20 miles in the wrong direction then cycle to work.

Car gets a better run each day and you get even more exercise than a 2 mile walk.

I always make sure the car is at least warmed up to nearish the middle of the thermometer thingy whatsit.... even if I've had to drive 2 miles in the opposite direction... and turn back around. I don't know if anyone has any evidence that this is necessary or not (I suspect Not).....??

When I get the papers, I do not let the revs go above 2,000 rpm and I use a light throttle. The shop is only a couple of miles away but the B road is narrow with lots of lorries. buses, tractors with nasty picking frames (they're bloody dangerous!) and fast cars, so walking is out of the question. I take the long way back to get the temperature up to normal. My belief is that cold oil and too much right foot is the major cause of wear on short journeys.

My opinion, for what it's worth. Neutral

Hi,

Interesting thread. I never thought or worried about that! Embarassed

I've been taking my son to school, which is only 3 miles way, and straight back home (usually), for over 5 years now, from monday to friday, early in the morning. The car sleeps outside all seasons. I open the door, switch the engine on and off we go...i never waited for the engine to warm up! Maybe i'm crazy or even stupid but i've never had a problem...so far! Very Happy

I never worried about the D3 since there was no DPF but with the D4 I always make sure that I get the engine up to working temperature. If needed for short journeys round the doors I divert on to the nearby motorway or one or more of the local dual carriageways for a burst of steady 50 to 70 mph for a few miles until everything is at normal temp. Not had any issues in over three years. Otherwise SWMBO's Jazz gets used. With permission of course. Whistle

Mines the same - short trips to school and supermarkets.

Mrs does use the FBH to ensure is warm for her own comfort tho...

Do take it for long jaunts fortnightly - led to believe its 10mins at above 2k rpm to clear the DPF.
 Last of the D4 HSE...

I’ve never had an issue. Had my D5 since March and only just broke 4K, my D4 was traded in at 1.5 year old with just over 7K on the clock. I’ve had 7 LRs with DPFs and never had an issue with short journeys, though I do give them a good run on my days off.

Though I think a nice petrol engine maybe in my next vehicle. My cars are my toys rather than a necessity, so something nice to play in is on the cards to replace the D5.

In my old D3 I ended up killing the torque converter with a lot of short work to and from work was 2 miles each way did that for 3 years so 900-1000x2 times and it eventually started to slip all I could put it down to was the constant high pressures from cold oil. Always below 2000rpm as well but she had 95k when started really being a problem. Wasn't a cheap fix in the end Sad well I sold it biggest mistake I've ever made Big Cry

Only use acea C1 grade oil, change it regularly and put a Ctek battery charger on once a week and you will be fine. Thumbs Up
