Should I or Shouldn’t I?

After owning a D3 last year I decided to sell up due to getting a work van. I thought that I would save money by selling the D3 and buy a D2. So far I’m 5 months into ownership with the D2 and haven’t had any problems (touch wood). I’m slowly getting a urge to get the D3 back in my life as I miss the long journey comforts/sheer brilliance (when they work). My questions are should I get one back or am I buying into someones reason to sell? Also do you think it’s better to buy one that’s slightly higher mileage wise but has had the inevitable work done I.e torque converter, compressors etc or a lower mileage vehicle but might require a work on in the future?
Thanks in advance Very Happy

James

Hi, we bought ours with 153000 miles on it with no knowledge of the type of car we were buying. It’s been amazing, luck of draw I think. I would like to get a d2 as a second car for when it does go wrong.
I Agee with your quote of sheer brilliance, nicest car I’ve sat in, and we haven’t got loads of money.
So fingers crossed.
I bet you’ve already seen one?

If you’re happy with what you have, why change. Whistle

Just like with technology, there is always the next/better car/telly/computer/etc. Thumbs Up

I kind of meant that if you don’t need it why bother investing but realized after posting that D3 is a rather cheap vehicle nowadays in the U.K.

Agree with jimmyjams, some vehicles are lemons and some are not. At the same time vehicles which are in their 13th year might need more TLC than vehicles only few years old.

A nice D2 while not a D3 is still a nice motor, had an 03 plate ES with all the toys. I do miss mine and there were some bits I preferred over the D3 but will not miss the terminal rust in the chassis

Yeah absolutely nothing wrong with my D2 although I went from a hse d3 to a fairly standard d2. Love the Td5 for a start. Do you think I’d be jumping back into a more problematic car?

Hi jimmy, we have only done about 7k so far so probably not much to boast about. It does make you smile whilst driving it tho. Still cheaper than a new car!

I think you would be mad not to buy a D3 if only for the comfort, I’ve owned 2 TD5’s from new both where crap, longest I kept them 12 months, kept the D3 13 years and it was still going strong and wish I had still got it, never ever had back ache from long journeys, twice in the D4 I’ve had to stop and give my back a rest Shocked
Think about it, no more showers every time you get out from water dripping down your neck that collects above the doors, change from low to high ratio without having to stop and put your arm out it’s socket because the gear lever is so stiff, air suspension, rear seats that fold flat so that you can sleep in it if needed, a turning circle so good you don’t have to do several shunts to turn round. 195bhp in standard form. Shall I continue and fill the page?
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Hi Pete I did think about that but my thought is a more expensive car is a more expensive car to repair is it not? What does the d4 compare to the D3 in terms of reliability and repair?

Hi lee 7k without any problems is pretty good that’s a years driving for me if I was to get one as I do all my work miles in my van!

M3DPO I get the same wet neck and wet knee (when the windows open) but you soon learn ways to avoid being hit Smile

What would be the best D3 to buy? Previous one was a HSE in Black with 153k on it.

You don’t have to avoid it and neither do the passengers in a D3 cos it doesn’t happen, D2s like a tank compared to a D3. All this talk about D2s being reliable is rubbish, second one I had was a complete lemon, it spent more time in the workshop than it did on the road, I ended up selling in the end because no one at LR could cure the clutch problems, I had 3 clutches fitted in 6 months, problems with the crankshaft floating that they could/would not cure.

Forget the mileage it’s irrelevant, three main things to look at, maintenance, maintenance, maintenance.
Best years and model to buy pre MY06 HSE, all weak links will have been replaced with upgraded D4 components, plenty of cheap spares about - compared to main stealer prices, lower RFL, lower insurance, mine reached an all time low of £145pa - D4=£500 Shocked

Thanks for the help! Is the torque converter and inevitable problem? Or is it just in some cases? I’m 23 so I can only dream of those insurance prices Big Cry

your talking about buying an 11 year old + landrover with air suspension, ZF6HP autogearbox, TDV6 engine.

The probability of that ending well is not that high

I don't think the OP needs to use low ratio

It's for similar reasons I decided NOT to go from a D3 with 115k to a D4. I know the history of my D3 and the mega flush has been done, the belts etc...
 D3 07 SE - still going strong
D3 07 HSE - gone to car heaven
FL1 - gone to Romania
D3 05 HSE - gone to a divorce diet
D1 V8 manual - gone but not forgotten
RR Classic - gone to car heaven

Jeeps, Lexus, X-trails... Too many to name..
