Side airbags blew out cresting a desert dune
I blew my side airbags yesterday while cresting a desert dune.
It was quite a steep dune, and i took it at a 45 degree angle, rather than straight over, and the sytem detected a roll over - BANG!
No damage whatsoever to the vehicle, and the manouver was performed safely in every respect. There were 7 other vehicles that all went over no problem - little JEEPS!
Firstly, this re-enforces my opinion that you should be able to de-activate ALL the airbags (and DSC AND TC) when off-roading; and
Secondly - I have an interesting time ahead convincing my insurer that they should pay for this (costly) repair - given that there was no accident or collision.
Does anyone else have any experience of similar incidents? How did you handle the insurance claim?
Any ideas on what this will cost to repair - my dealer won't give me a quote for repairs until I have been to the insurance Co for them to inspect the vehicle...
Very sadly, i am coming to the conclusion that I have found the limits of this vehicle, and probably need to move on to something with a little less technology...
Sorry to hear this - there was a similar thread a while ago, where somebody was out with a mixed group of vehicles and others had suffered a similar problem. But the D3 was fine."To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

Wouldn't it be under warranty as the airbag went off prematurely. If it was an accident by the time it had rolled the bags would have deflated so it can't be right and must have deployed early.
Or am I talking rubbish.

A colleque of me blew his side airbag on a Opel Corsa when he slammed the door shut when he was angry when he continued driving with a flat winter tyre for to long. It was raining and he though it was the water on the road that made the noise. When he stopped and saw that his 2 week old wintertyre was destroyed he threw his door shut and the driver side airbags went off.
He was quoted just over 1000 euro for just one side.Roel

No way man - the banner above this thread says "Lincoln driver training" - my surname is Lincoln - are the forum moderators having me on???!!!
Round one with the insurance - I lose - they say they won't pay because I did not actually have an accident. They suggest I take this up with the dealer. This is gonna be fun - not!
Off to the stealer tomorrow...Don't allow an inanimate object to outwit you.
Sounds like it failed under warranty to me The End

Which airbags went off ...i.e which side ??
The 'restraints control module', which decides what needs to be fired and when, will have also recorded the conditions and detection values at the time......if you went beyond the pre-determined roll-over limit and lets say one wheel came off the ground then it is not unreasonable for it to think it was going over and commencing the firing sequence.21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Both sides went off. Not front.
Thanks for that - I'll be sure to ask the workshop for a report on what set the bags off...

Personally I am rather glad the D3 sets off the airbags when it detects a roll situation. If they were switchable when off road, I can see someone suing LR when they failed to go off and being very peeved off that they had avoidable injuries.
Sorry to hear what happened of course and good luck with getting it sorted.
At least no one was injured

As opposed to front bags ..... Side curtains retain 80% of their inflation for 5 seconds .... equivalent to 3 rolls of your motor 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

3 Rolls, sounds like a good system although not keen to benefit from it.
About 10 years ago I hit a pothole in my BMW 328. It set off the passenger dash, door and curtain airbags. The dealer said I should be claiming off my insurance but I argued successfully that they bags should not have deployed. I won the arguement . BMW paid. 8) 8)
