Side Step Maintenance/Detailing |
|
My Side steps have been on since new (Apr 06) and the aluminium section down the side has become rather tarnished, black spots etc.
I have tried various substances on it to try and improve the appearance, all without success, and despite doing a search on here to see if any solutions exist, I cannot find any answers.
Taking them off is not an option with young children and elderly parents frequently using the car, and i would like them to not detract from the rest of the car when that has been cleaned.
Current options therefore are
1. Hope that some clever person on here can recommend a suitable cleaner.
2. Rub them down and paint them with plastikote or similar.
3. Hope that someone else has had a similar problem and found a different solution.
Has anyone any comments or suggestions that might help?

No
Cannot find the charger for the battery on my digital camera, and the ones off the phone will not be good enough quaility to properly show the problem.
Will have access to another camera at the weekend so will take some pics and PM jkp and let you know how i get on! I might suggest he replies in open forum so everyone can benefit from the response I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. Ah' missed this on my journeys
If you talking about the trim around the outside, then autoglym or autosol metal polish (get this is halfords) on a microfibre pad worked in usually works for me. I do a fair few FFRR and RRS sidesteps this way. For the more stubborn ones use wire wool #00 with a dab of cleaner.
There are also good BLACKFIRE products and THIS which will clean and protect.
I hope that helps

Yeah, its the aluminium trim round the edge that has black spots/marks on it.
I will take a look in more detail at the options you provided tonight.
Thanks

Another option, although not sure if you have any as i lose track who I sell to on here, is to try Lime Prime with a microfibre cloth. This has abrasives in it and can lift a fair bit of cr@p if working in. Worth a go if you have any

Used this for years on the alloy of the bike engines, wheels etc and then as you say, on the strip on the running board, works a treat. ATB
