Side step silver trim.

Just been checking the rivets on both my side steps, all the rivets on the drivers side step are fine but two of the rivet heads on the passenger side have vanished! Searched through 15+ Shocked pages of side step postings on here but can not find the post on fixing them. Can I just put a couple of small self tappers into the damaged rivets or do they need to be reriveted?

My passenger strip fell off last week, 3 rivets were missing and when I pushed the strip back into place the other rivets sheared off, so even though the remaining rivets look okay they may be brittle. might be worth replacing all the rivets to be on the safe side.

To do this I found this post by dlks151 -

Quote:
Simply drill out and re-rivet using 5mm x 12.5mm grip aluminium rivets. Can be done with the steps in place if you dont mind missing a couple of the hard to get to fixings, otherwise you'll need to drop the step (which to be honest is a lot easier).

Located in this thread -

It sounds straight forward enough.

Cheers,

Woody, remove the trim before you use the D3, once it comes off it's ditch the steps or buy a new set. I found this too, so removed mine completely and really cleaned the area. I then applied TigerSeal to step and trim, cable tied till it set. Rock solid now

thanks for both your replies, judging by the underneath of the steps (very rusty) it would probably be better to take them both off, remove the silver trims, clean/repaint both steps, rerivet (never done any riveting before Embarassed is this easy) and tigerseal silver bits back on and finally replace them on the D3.

Sounds like a lot of work but better than loosing the trims - so I'll go and have a go at removing them in a bit - bolts look rather rusty too!

not going well, passenger side step came off fine although the 2 bolts holding the step onto the centre bracket both sheared off Rolling Eyes . One of the bolts on the driver side step just spins round and therefore will not undo Crying or Very sad - will have another go at undoing it tomorrow. Hopefully I'll be able to get some new bolts - preferably in stainless steel so they dont rust again!

Eventually and with a neighbours help. We released the rubber trim from the step (if you look underneath the step you can see the rubber clips that hold it on) so that we could grip the top of the bolt with some molegrips and then was able to undo the last bolt. The hexagon head of the bolts just slots into a shaped space on the metal part of the step but the problem was caused by this bolt being overtightened and the shaped recess becoming rounded. All the bolts and nuts have been renewed - and each one will be covered with a dab of grease once they are refitted.

My neighbour then helped me to remove all the rust (was just surface rust), replace the damaged rivets and then give both steps a coat of smooth black hammerite underneath. Will be putting the steps back on the car on Friday after I've cleaned the silver strips with some AutoGlym chrome cleaner. Not sure whats best to clean the rubber treads with - will just use some soap and water once they are back on the car.

Really glad you are getting them sorted, mine are still broken and sat in the garage Embarassed

I was going to have a bit of a change and fit side protection tubes but they are a bit more expensive than I thought so after much deliberation and when some free time eventually appears I'll do the same as you have.

Always used baby wipes on the treads which brings them up a treat although it does make them a bit slippy for a while.

Cheers,

YTA

bambi, you can download and print the destructions from here

Which bolts do you need? I presume you have the brackets?

The bolts/nuts and washers that hold the side steps onto the brackets are all M6 (bolts are 16mm in length although Ive fitted new ones 25mm in length) and the bolts/washers that hold the brackets onto the D3 are M8 but not sure of the length of these bolts.

Both steps now back on Smile but decided not to clean the silver trim and the tread until they were refitted so will do that later.
