Side-steps vs running-boards vs "sport tubes"? |
|
Any advice on side-steps vs running-boards vs "sport tubes"?
My 5-year-old son needs to be lifted in, and more importantly, keeps falling out, and wifey likes the look of stainless steel "side pipes", but I'm not convinced on how useful they would be, or even if they might be dangerous...?
I see that original equipment side-steps are ~400 GBP, after-market versions ~100GBP less and s/s side pipes ~240GBP on eBay.
I have a black 2007 Disco3 XS TDV6, and live in Medway, Kent. Anyone have a car with these items fitted that I can take a look at? Anyone have any experience of fitting the "sport tubes" or side-steps or whatever and can add their opinions?
Cheers

I recently fitted a set of original equipment L R sidesteps to my 2007 XS.I have two boys and the younger one can now get in and out without any bother.I think that they look a lot "classier" on the car than some of the ones advertised on fleabay.I bought them from "Slimer",a site member and supplier of various goodies for the car.If I remember they were about £295 delivered. There are three brackets which bolt on each side, holes etc already there to accept them. The only footery bit id the plastic sill covers have to come off and three holes cut in them to accept the brackets before replacing them on the car.The first one took a while but the second was a lot easier.A job for a dry saturday morning.Kids can't climb up into the car via the s/s tubes,or at least mine couldn't with a previous car.Hope this helps.

Many thanks for the prompt reply.
You've confirmed my suspicions about the s/s tubes being ornamental.
I guess I'll add some meaningless posts to bring my total up, unless Slimer PMs me 1st...
Cheers
I'd be happy to hear opinions from anyone who has fitted side-steps or running boards from [fl]eBay or elsewhere.

They are NOT ornamental !!
But what I suspect you meant is that if YOU had them fitted, it would be ornamental.
I use my D3 off road & my side tubes are bashed to b*ggery underneath.
If it wasn't for the tubes it would've been the sills that took the bashing !
That therefore is not ornament for me. I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

Do a certain ex-site sponsor (who I am not allowed to mention through fear of the D3 SS arriving at my door) not supply the tubes but with a flattened rubberised step section formed in? 2014 D4 XS

Got two of those (LR Genuine) on the D3... they didn't survive the first greenlaning party...
Replaced them with "Rasta" protection, howver those are not meant to push aside some rocks or trees... so as far as offroading is concerned there is no solution yet. now as a side step they were doing the job except that you may get mud on your pants if you do not step on them...
Have fun ! A second D3 ! This time with all whistles and bells (Auto, 7seats, Diff Lock, RAI, all kinds of protections, winch, Extended range tank, iPod adapter....)
First time twice the same car ! and first time third car of the same brand !
I'm loving it !
