Slow starting
Mrs DSL's D3 has over the last few weeks become more & more sluggish at starting. I've had a search & found the temperature related starting software fix but this is not at -2degC, it's at the sort of temperatures we are having now (10degC in the morning & from 15degC to 23degC through the rest of the day) and noticeably more sluggish first thing. The car is used daily & not just short (8 miles) trips so the battery should be fully charged. It is noticeably sluggish at starting compared with my car. The dealer could not find a fault at the service last week. Is there a nice TSB I can wave at the dealer re this problem? I'm off on a jaunt up to N Scotland so I do not want to risk it not starting miles from anywhere with no mobile signal.

Does it sound as if it's cranking slower than normal on the starter, or that it is cranking normally but just doesn't catch for longer than normal?IE - 05 D3 TDV6 HSE - Zambezi Silver

Definately cranking slower, I can compare it with my car & there is a big difference. Catches in about the same number of turns, just they are a good bit slower.
Possibly starter motor is on the way out, mine did that for a while before it died completelyThe End

Hi,
just joined that fabulous forum to share my recent experience on that issue.
My Disco 3 was starting very slow as well since I bougth it in November last year as an occasion from my local dealer. I thoungt that the battery is somehow weak and that`s the reason for this. Yesterday morning it didn't start at all while turning the key. Just a silent "click" and nothing else. The garage now told me that the starter motor is defective and has to be replaced. They already ordered one and I'll get my car back by end of today. It will be repaired on guarantee - so no worries about costs. BUT: a defective starter after 18 months and 37'000km????
My previous car was a Disco 1, which I had to sell after 13 years and 260'000km. It had still it's first starter in....
makes me thinking...

The starter is due to be replaced next Tuesday, still cranking slowly but not died yet. The chief tech at the stealer took one listen to it & said "duff starter motor" & got it booked in for replacement. It's already had a service with the starter reported as a problem but because it hasn't failed, it wasn't replaced.

FYI
The Blue Pearl also had an intermittent slow starting problem. This occurred at the same time we had power steering stiffness.
So the Power Steering Pump is connected to the engine via the ancillary belt. The poor old starter has to turn the engine over that has a seized pump connected to it, this = starter.In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Will see if I can blag a new power steering pump at the same time. How can I connect poor starting with scratches from offroading???

Why a power steering pump?
If there's nowt wrong with it, why do you need one?

May as well ask for a new alternator and air con compressor as well then IE - 05 D3 TDV6 HSE - Zambezi Silver

Will just be happy with my replacement starter motor! Especially as off on 7 weeks travels up North & to France, don't want it packing up on that trip!
