Well it's been to the dealer who diagnosed it being a wiring issue between KVM module and RF receiver. They say KVM module is fine and it might very well be the case. So I picked it up and will remove enough interior to trace the the 7 meters of wiring between the two connectors and check if there are any issues.

OK, finally some time to work on the D4 when all the christmas food was eaten and the kids busy with their new toys.
Concluded that the headlining needed to come down to allow access to the RF module, the access through the rear light cluster was too cramped for my hands at least.
After measuring the signal wire between the RF module and the KVM, it was clear that it was no continuity. I tracked it from the roof until it goes down in A pillar behind the dash and then when it comes out on on floor level on the other side and back to the KVM module. No damages could be seen so must be behind the dash. Anyway, did not feel the urge to take that out today so spliced in a new piece of wire. After that, operations are restored to normal and I could just refit all trim pieces again.
