Why smash a window if you can start the car?

At about midnight last night our neighbour woke to the sound of glass smashing. Looking out of the window he saw a man getting into the Discovery and start the car, having smashed the front passenger window. The man sat in the car for a bit, then got out, locked the car and walked down the road before getting into another car just as the police arrived.

There are no signs that the man somehow hotwired the car. So, while I understand that these car keys can be cloned, why would he smash the window?

Such a bore but a huge thanks to our neighbour who immediately called the police and then called us to let us know what happened.

To plug a widget into the OBD port to format a new key to then unlock the car would be my WAG. Thumbs Up

not "or" … essential.

I'd also suggest getting a disclok or similar AND have a good look round the car to see if there's a tracker attached.

they didn't take you car there and then for their own reasons.

Agree to disclock and getting the keys reprogrammed. I may move the car to a more secure location until this is done.

Can’t believe they didn’t even take the Peppa Pig DVD! Such a shame...

I’m shocked.

I thought you needed to have an already-programmed key in the car before you could add a new key.

But then, is this keyless ignition? And, as a D4, doesn’t IID have the option of telling you how many keys are coded to the car? Might be able to let you figure out what they tried to do.

Keyless ignition. Spoke to LR garage who said they may have to replace the module and possibly the steering lock depending on what they find.

One thing I realised at 2am was the amount of things in the car with either my name or address on it (AA card, insurance docs, etc). A lesson learnt.

There has been a recent spate of vehicle thefts near us and apparently some thefts of the cameras/parking sensors on the back of cars. Very odd.

Breaking in means they've coded a new key - which you might not have realised if it wasn't for this forum, you might just think they were after contents, and just get the glass replaced. Then they come back a few days later and the car just disappears (using the new key they coded). Saves them from having to replace the glass!

it's open to interpretation but some of the stuff blatantly advertised on the net doesn't appear to need a key present. mine wasn't when first D4 was stolen. locked inside a metal safe in the dealers. spare was 4 miles away @ my house.

took them longer to cut away the security fencing than break window, start car. Sad
