Great write up, thanks for sharing.
Just too add, i got a d4 prior to my current one, had competed around 8-9k if i remember since its last service, no lights etc but i checked oil as i planned to service it as the new owner, its was scandalously low, like a few pints in it...

Interesting thread on facebook, local land rover specialist reckon they have done 50/60 D4 crank fialures in the last 12 months!.
Times that by the amount of land rover independents in the UK!
Never mind several other 3.0 v6 engine issues, chains/pistons etc.

Saw my first D4 snapped crank in the metal today! Independent specialist in Stockport has it on display in the shop.
Yes it looks scary, but he says it’s the first one he’s seen, and it didn’t come from a vehicle they looked after. Good job because they are doing the belts and 7 year service on mine in 3 weeks!
He reckons quality oil is everything in a D4, and make sure there’s enough of it. Admittedly difficult with the lack of traditional dipstick!

When I had an E53 X5 with "lifetime" sealed gearbox (Look at the failures those gearboxes had!! (5sp GM))
I asked a local dealer what they consider "Lifetime"
Response was "The life of the vehicle".. Typically vague.
When further pushed was quoted "100k miles or 6 years"
So LR appear significantly better in comparison.If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....

Anything I say is only from my personal experience and knowledge..
I don't assume to know everything, and know there is a lot I don't know..
But then I could be talking .. O
