Snapped Crank or normal??

So I brought a D3 as a non runner, found the oil pump snapped so checked under the cam covers and all looks ok....the crank however dose this, which I'm guessing means it's snapped. I took the little sump off but can't really see much, but I think it might be terminal.

thought as much, it has to be the parts you cant get hold of that break dosnt it Laughing

I suppose the easiest way to see would be to see if the starter end goes round when I turn the front end, but for the endplay its still going to have to come out and I dont have a 2 post.

Good idea about the starter.

You can get cranks, but they are £3000

People have taken the engine out, body on.

info here to remove upper sump to see crank.

I just need to do the underside bits and the engine should be ready to lift out, I was planning on doing an engine out on it anyways but thought I would just check the camshaft covers to see if there was any damage and it was all clear, but then when I went to take the crank bolt out to get the oil pump off I notices that movement.

Wish I would have carried on with the out procedure today rather than struggling to get the cam covers off in situ . You live and learn I guess.

Can get genuine new engines (well block and heads) for 4k from landrover I read somewhere, if its crank dead I might aswell go down that route.

Scrap because you can't get genuine cranks? Or for other reasons?

When the crank goes and/or oil pump is does a lot of damage.

Never heard of both together

Now logic to me would be if the oil pump fails because the tensioner has snapped, it would be just top end damage from the valves going out of time and the engine stopping , which I can't see breaking the crank. Unless it continued to run somehow, starved of oil and then snapped the crank after?

Cranks are weak on these.

If the crank breaks it takes the block with it as the alignment of the main bearing carrier goes too.

Or the crank snapped first, and the momentum of the camshafts caused the already weakened belt tensioner mounting on the oil pump to shear off, as the valves came to a sudden halt as they collided with the pistons?

Im sure DM has said on here before if crank or tensioner goes it causes havoc with the shells and means the block is scrap?
