Does snorkel kit affect engine performance? |
|
I guess the question says it all!
Surely the snorkel kit must restrict the amount of air reaching the engine and hence affect performance???

Surely the engine is sucking the air in..... rather than the air thinking 'oh... shall I go in here' 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

DG, engine performance is greatly affected by how much air the engine can 'suck' in. You also 'suck' air in when you breath, but it would be much harder to breath air through a straw, which is what might be happening to the engine with the snorkel.
The question stands, does the snorkel affect engine performance or is it designed in a way as to avoid air flow problems.

There is no noticeable performance decrease with the LR raised air intake fitted, unlikely to be too as there is pipework further down the air intake system that is more restrictive than the raised air intake
Having it fitted should hopefully improve performance slightly as less dust should get to the filter and also has the added advantage of preventing water from the windscreen getting to the side window The End

Surprisingly a snorkel improves engine performance power & mileage a bit because of the ram-air effect feeding your intake. Also it breaths coolerr air in. My mileage has increased 2mpg with the raised air intake not a lot but hey I'm not so good at giving advice...may I offer you a sarcastic comment instead?

Cheers guys
That makes sense, the cooler air being more dense will give more power (like an intercooler).

slightly , but when travelling at speed [ie 70mph] does the LR RAI induce excess air noise over non fitment?? I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

Yes it does for me anyways Ronp...kinda noisy at high speeds or winds actually. I'm not so good at giving advice...may I offer you a sarcastic comment instead?

I've never noticed it being any noisier Ron, been running around without it on for the past couple of weeks and it doesn't seem any quieter either The End

In accordance with fluid hydrodynamics (Pousielle's law) for every doubling the diameter of a pipe the flow rate increases by a factor of 16 (so dont make the air intake too small)! Also, the longer a pipe is the more the flow is reduced (so don't make the air intake too long)! The ram effect works (to some extent) to overcome these issues c/f an air intake. Cold versus hot air also will play a part and lifting the air intake away from the hot bitumen helps. regards
Peter

Depends on how big your mouth is I guess

Doesn't Poiseuille's law also say that if you increase the length of a pipe then the flow rate is reduced? So for every doubling of the length you'd need to increase the diameter by 19% just to maintain the same flow rate. You might be able to ram more air in if the snorkel faced forwards, but you'd probably catch the occasional bird and fill it up with water in the rain !!! 2005 D3 HSE

Poiseuille's law predominantly deals with liquids ...not air
...and haydar...sadly they don't make a straw big enough ...but thanks for the informative breathing lesson 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
