add 8gb of ram and an ssd and this will be a great laptop for university - both simple and cheap to add to make a really good machine!
Apple spec says max 4gb but will take 8gb, just remove the plate in the battery aperture and slot in. The SSD replaces the internal HD but operates so much faster - with ram and ssd will boot in a couple of seconds and programmes load in 1 to 2 seconds (did one for my son for University and its faster than many friends PCs costing 4 times as much!)Must stop buying shiny toys....

Cheers Darrind!
It just doesn't get used in our house myself and SWMBO both have work laptops and iPads so can justify keeping it. It'll be great for someone

At that price it's a steal.
I did the above mentioned upgrades, makes for a very fast, stable machine.

Hi BLFarrar, it defaulted to Lion when I restored to sell on, previously it had El Capitan but I just went with the default. I'll let Moo update to how he wants going forward

Damn, missed out. I'd have had this from you at that price. I've got a 2008 Macbook which is still going strong (albeit with a new battery and an SSD) but stuck on Snow Leopard (too old to upgrade beyond that). I've got a much newer iMac in the office, but it would be nice to get a bit more up to date on the laptop as well. Moo, you've got a bargain - these are great machines.
a bit puzzled my iMac is a year older than yours with a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor which I thought was the one above the demarcation line on OS upgrades.
I use ElKapitan currently 10.11.6 Beta (15G26a) a Beta test version for the Sierra OS) - no problems with OS upgrades...Its this that is the deciding factor on renewing my iMac.
The new machine for me will be a MacPRO with a 5k screen
Currently the free upgrade is to ElKapitan 10.11.5..the new OS will be called macOS Sierra available in the Autumn
check your system out & see if it will upgrade - you do this in the AppStore the OS upgrade option checks your system outBREXIT - done properly.

I have a 2008 on El Capitan. Works fine. This is for my 11 year old to use at school. I'll upgrade the ram and put in an ssd in it. To be honest, what she needs to do Lion or Snow Leopard will be fine.New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)
