Somebody please convince me not to go over to the Dark Side

The D3, which has been a good vehicle with all things considered, is due for replacement. I like the idea of getting a D4 but some of the threads on this forum have me worried, especially when dealers are so far apart here in Oz.

So, from those with D4's, what would you say to me to convince me not to go over to the Dark Side and buy a Toyota Landcruiser 200 Series? (I need to be able to tow 3.5 tonnes).

Thanks in advance,

cheers

No brakes! Shocked
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Dont be a Gayer! I have no doubt a Landbruiser will be a decent car but you cant compare it next to a D3/D4. Totally soulless as is the norm for most rice burners.

I am on my sixth Discovery; the previous two vehicles were D3s.

The D4 is a huge step forward, even from the D3, when it comes to driving. The 3.0 litre diesel is smooth, quiet and responsive, and shoves a brute of a car along at startling rate when required. It's road manners and poise are no comparison to the D3; agile, sure footed and nimble - I don't consider the ride nay harsher, though this has been suggested.

Build quality is up again; the new interior is far classier than the Japanese alternative, and if you've had a D3 and been pleased with it, you cannot fail to be even more pleased with a D4.

With a Landcruiser, you are getting a very capable and well proven vehicle, but it is rather dull. With the D4, you are getting a Land Rover, and probably the best Land Rover built to date.

When away at Christmas with the tin tent, ran into another D4 owner, he had just changed from a FFRR and had had four diffrent RR's previous to that. He had had the D4 for 2 months and thought in his words far better than the FFRR. I do not know what model or engine he had in the RR but he was sure the D4 was better. Hope this helps.

I had the same question last week.
My Brother in Oz has a Landcrusiers and loves it, I nearly bought one last week but after reading this forum from end to end I felt better about ordering a D4.
Had a test drive in both cars and the D4 is streets ahead of the Landcrusiers LC5.
I have had 5 FFRR and the last one was off the road for 5 months waiting for parts so it took a lot to make me order a new car from Land rover. I dont know if I would go walkabouts in one for days on end but around the citys and coast no problem.

Poor dust sealing
Have heard of some aircon issues
Fuel Consumption well you will need a support tanker if you are going to tow
Just plain dull and slow

Don't do it.... quite apart from the thottle problems, who wants to drive something that has no soul and is just another dull 4x4

I have had plenty of eastern 4x4s- Nissan Patrols (better than Toyota), Diahatsu Fourtraks (made by Toyota) and Mitsubishi. My mate once said, yes they are good 4x4's but they just ain't a Land Rover. I used to laugh until 11 years ago I had my first Defender. He was right, there is nothing like having the best 4x4xFar and had quite a few ever since- nothing else feels the same. Wink

I have had a D3 which was good.... I now have a D4 and without tempting fate, I have done 2800 miles without 1 problem- its absolutely excellent, everything the D3 should have been in the first place, a car for every occasion- comfort, power and goes anywhere, plus it just feels good driving it.

Went into our local garden centre the other day and clocked a person oggling my motor as he got out of his FFRR. Me and the wife went in and headed for the some greasy breakfast before I was subjected to the plant run. I could not believe that the bloke in front of me (the one who was getting out of his FFRR and admiring my motor in the carpark) turns round and says, "is that your D4, it looks the dogs dangly bits" and proceeds in telling me how fantastic it is and wants to swap his FFRR for one obviously I agreed with him, it was a great conversation piece. But more importantly for you Russ is would this bloke have approached you if you had a Toyota... I think not (especially when he was in England and you are in Oz) Laughing

BUY A LAND ROVER- YOU WILL NEVER BE SATISFIED WITH ANYTHING ELSE and end up swapping it later anyway... I wasted thousands on other motors before following the heart instead of someone else's head. Mr. Green

You will pay a lot more for less with the LC200 (apart from the amount of metal Rolling Eyes )

Drive both and see what you think of them then compare value.
The best value would probably be the 2.7L engine. The 3.0L is a better engine than the Tojo TDV8 and won't chew oil or fail like the Tojo one. Laughing

I understand your concern with the D4, there seem to be a few niggly issues with the electronics and turbos. I would keep the D3 a bit longer and get the second build of the D4, they should have sorted the issues with the new engine and toys by then. And given what happed with the D3 you get more toys with the later MYs.
