Looks like I may not get much change from £1100.
Bought the car for a lot less than 6k though and found a load of LR service receipts which aren't in the service book Smile
Also just found a hand written note that says egr/belts 97k, big service 117k Liverpool LR center....
I'm told the accounts department open on the 2nd and will check their records for me to see what work they have done on my car.

If it all check out then I'll be much happier to throw a bit of cash at it.

Just fitted a new MAF and recieved a new car!!!!
I am now getting much more throttle response and 40% better Mpg!
Well chuffed.
Planning the first ATF flush tomorrow (in the rain Sad ), fingers crossed

Edit: Has anyone used basic chromatography to check for glycol in the trans oil, or is it best to have a sample sent to a lab?

Jim

Your HSE has done quite a few miles, if the gearbox hasn't been flushed then it is overdue!
Slight fluctuations of the rev counter at a constant speed is a very usual indicator that the oil is past its best.
Some 'Mega' flushers (Mega Flush is a trade name of one of the many machines that all do the same job, think Hoover!) use an oil that has a conditioner in it and this can improve things markedly.

My original D3 HSE had done about 150,000 maybe more and started to show the rev counter fluctuation symptoms. In those days a proper flush machine was a rare thing and I had to go for a 'double flush'.

That cured the fluctuations but left the slight judder when accelerating up a slope say from a roundabout.
The subsequent 'Mega Flush' cured that as well.
I went on to do another 40,000 trouble free miles before selling it!

My latest one has more miles on it 191,000 and so far a 'Mega Flush' with a local independent here in Cardiff has -so far - proved successful. Time will tell. The juddering got severely worse but the knowledgeable ones on this forum think that is a rear brake issue not gearbox thank goodness. The bits to replace callipers and parking brake shoes have started to arrive!

Oh the joys of an old high mileage D3!!
Keep the faith though1

Ian

I bought a cheap 10L garden spray tank and 5 meters of 10mm ID clear hose.
Gotta nip into town for some jubilee clips tomorrow morning then it's game time.
Gotta give the IID tool back soon so best crack on with it.
Going to drain the sump first then do the Filo Flush

make sure you can mate all the hoses up before draining the fluid.

measure what fluid came out, so you can refill with the approx same amount.

you can use the IID to get the gear oil temp when checking the oil level. (maybe a friday morning job)

So you know what you are doing then ?

I think I've got it thanks.
Good tip to check that the hoses all fit before draining the oil.

How crucial is it to be on level ground during a flush?
The entrance to my garage is on a bit if a decline?

Not a problem. The drain plugs at the rear so best have the rear lower.

To be honest I don't think you need to flush um.

Simply drain/pump out ~5.5 l

And put in new. The new oil was only slightly discoloured so did a good job of getting most out.

So if you have say 10 litres new you could save it for a change in 6 months time. Or a year.

its borderline flooding here, again, so to remove the risk of drowning I only did the Filo method.
Pumped out 3.5L of black filth, replaced with 3.5L of AG55, went for a drive for 30 miles and the repeated.
Got 3.5L out the 2nd time too.
It's sunny on the weekend so they say, so I'm going to do a 3rd (maybe a 4th) flush then too. This time I'm going to add my 2 tubes of Dr Tranny.
Initial experience is that I have alleviated 50% of the problem, still getting slight rev hunting while cruising an quite drastic needle movement during periods of coasting down hill.

Edit: I'm planning to check the oil levels before I do the next flush

yeah may as well check the level .

You could always wait till the weather is better, and change 5.5l

Seams a shame to waste all that oil

The 2nd flush still came out black, I'm hoping to get my oil reasonably clear.
Plus Bodsy suggested I do 4 flushes and then one flush per service from now on.

I'd like to stop the revs bouncing so much when coasting down hill but I may have to live with this for now.

My oil was black to start with.

But when I removed 3.5 pumped out the front
and 2 litres out the sump.

when refilled the oil stayed golden.

You are falling into the age old trap of only removing half the oil and then adding clean.

You are never getting rid of all the old oil.

and I only used 6 litres to do it!

2 litres on the right came out the sump
3.5 litres out the front on the left.

Well today I drained and pumped.
Got 3.5L out of the dump but nothing out when I pumped.
Beginning to think I should've pumped first.
The oil I got out was much clearer though so I'm replacing with new and seeing how it goes.
