sound dropouts and SatNav screen reboot |
|
I've noticed this a few times but now seems to be getting worse. When playing a CD (could be radio too but just haven't noticed it) I get the sound drop out for 1/4 sec or so, normally shortly after the car has been started. Its like a small glitch in the sound.
Just today this happened only this time I lost sound for longer, maybe a second and the satnav screen also rebooted.
It seems like a loss of power. Any specific connections or areas to consider first? Anyone had this before ?

Both of these happened to me about once a week until I changed my battery.

Sounds (no pun intended) like your MOST fibre optic bus is going down.
The bus is a ring of light starting from the Radios Piggy Backed IHU (Intergrated Head Unit) that is then sent to the next member of the Bus, eg the screen unit. Each member re transmits the light, which contains data and sound channels to the next member, until it eventually returns to the IHU. The Audio Amplifier is also on the bus
Interruptions to the power supply or software problems in any member can break the chain resulting in the loss of audio and a system re starting. Poor battery voltage, as nasher suggests, could be a cause.
I had a case where a bad earth to my TMC unit would knock out sound for a few seconds whenever i hit a bump,
I also discovered that there was a known problem with D3's where wiring was being pinched by the rear left drivers seat mounting.
You need to get all your infotainment modules updated to the latest software and check all connections to them.

Thanks guys for the replies. Replacing the battery is at least an easy fix. Are there any other symptoms of a failing battery? In my experience of other cars the first sign of a failing battery is inability to start

My D3 was starting fine, but had quite a few niggly little issues that have now all gone since the battery change.
Like yourself I always thought it would be slow starting that I noticed first, and that has been the case with previous vehicles I've had, but with the D3 it was other things, although now the new battery is in it's obvious that the engine is spinning up and starting quicker than it was.
Obviously it's only a suggestion, as there are people on here like BBS with far more knowledge than me.

Thank you for the vote of confidence Nasher.
But i just have my own little area of expertise and knowledge and while i freely and happily contribute what and where i can, and have added a whole new world of personal diagnostic equipment availiability and modification possibilities that all D3 and D4 owners now regularly benefit from, it is but a humble contribution compared to the value of the collective day to day experience and knowledgable help and advice that is commonly found and shared on this board
