Spare Wheel Hoist Seizure

Classification
Mechanical system issue

Problem
Spare wheel hoist seizing if the cable is raised/lowered without tension on it

Affected vehicles
All

Reported
15th July 2006 by Herman in Post #70695

Reported Cases
Many, see Topic #2632

Occurs
Constant issue

Submitted to dealer network

Submitted to LR Customer Services

LR CS Response Reported

Fix/Solution
None: Spare wheel hoists have been replaced under warranty, unaware if any design changes have been made to the hoist to prevent the same problem occuring again. To mitigate the risk of seizure I would recommend that anyone who is raising or lowering the cable with out a wheel hanging on it puts tension on it.

Other Comments
Probably the only time that vehicle owners will use the wheel hoist is when they have to use the spare due to a puncture. If you put the wheel with the punctured tyre in the boot and raise the cable without tension on it, when you come lower the cable it may seize.

There is no evidence that a modified hoist has been introduced.

Except that LR - at least in Australia - recommend in their manual that you remove the spare wheel from underneath the car before going off-road. Shocked Shocked Shocked

Yep, that exactly what happened to me. Punctured tyre placed in boot and winch wound up without tension. This seized the winch and the whole part had to be replaced under warranty, (it's a sealed unit). I can't see if there are any design changes inside, but I certainly won't be winding this up or down without some weight on it!

Winch made by Magal metallifacture (the old AP Driveline) in Lemington Spa.
There engineers are not aware of this problem, no feed back has been received from Land Rover on this issue.

Recently had a puncture and put the removed wheel in the boot.

Wound up the cable with no wheel and it worked fine.

I had a puncture last week, got the spare off ok, took wheel to be repaired.

Tried to put spare back today, cable came down about 9" when I felt it starting to jam. Had to get one of the guys from work to pull on cable whilst I unwound it. Got the job done, but it'd be impossible if you were on your own.

I had the same problem recently. I wound the cable up empty after I got a puncture doing the Easter Weekend. When I wound it back out it then 'seized' CarlS removed the hoist took it apart sorted the 'sprung' cable re-assembled the unit and all is fine. Thumbs Up

It winds up when empty ok its the unwind empty that appears to be the issue. So from now on as AVE said I will get someone to pull on it as I wind it out.

The winch on the D3 is a posh upmarket one apparently with moulded in wire guides, the cheap one Renault and Ford use are plain bobbins

Mine siezed under these conditions, but not too siezed, as I hung the wheel on the spring on the cable with a pair of clamps, worked the winding nut a bit and it came free. Maybe I was just lucky.

Unnecessary quote removed

Same approach worked for me, too. It seemed well stuck at one point, but patient jiggling worked it loose.. Don't give up too early! Wink

Different type of failure.
Mine would not lift the wheel, but would support wheel.
Suspect winder clutch failed.
Replacement unit 75 UKP, fitting 40 UKP (independent workshop).
