Spare wheel retaining cable

My spare wheel cable feels like it's tangled up as it won't lower down for me to put the spare back up,do I need to undo the 4 bolts/nuts that I can see on the housing to release it ? I have found(now it's too late)a way to apply tension to it so that it won't get tangled and that's by attaching my dogs lead to the wheel retainer and run it under the towbar and pulling it as you unwind it(just in case there's no one around to help)

It just unbolts... I had to replace mine as it had seized completely and couldn't be freed. ISTR that a replacement cost about £40 from TLO.

I had this and I faffed around with it a bit. I have a heavy tow rope (a group buy from here) and I tied it to something firm and attached the other end to the dangling spare wheel hook (that would go neither up not down) and I put some weight on it (I had the car on the almost level drive and let it move to take the slack out of the rope but didn't 'pull' as such) and then tried to wind the hook out. I went in and out a bit and with the extra load there was a clonk and it released. I guess the wire inside had got twisted and couldn't come out of the hole.
