Spare Wheel Winch Lifting Capacity

By any chance does anyone know the lifting capacity of the spare wheel winch. I am thinking of converting a circular LPG tank to a temporary auxiliary diesel fuel tank to be held in place using the standard wheel winch - weight will be about 80kg.

Cheers

Is that 80Kg plus fuel?

From the number of failures, about 75% of the weight of a rim and tyre!

However, you may well be lifting an empty tank which you then fill, so what you need to know is the static load it will support, not what it can lift. If this is to be a permanent arrangement I'd suggest removing the winch and making a bracket to fit onto its mountings that can support the tank.

I would not support a tank of explosive gas with a cable that could break at any time - especially in the stresses of an accident Shocked

the cable is a decent size so doubt it would break and the winch is quite sturdy when wound up (when its functioning). the issue Ive had with my winches is that they are fine when the load is in place, however when you unwind the winch all the dust, stones and mud that collects inside falls to the bottom and takes up the space where the first couple of winds of rope would normally be. When the rope is wound to the top the spool is full but the length equivalent to two winds is still left dangling and also the cable crossing over the guides also damages the spool so even when cleaned it doesnt quite work properly.
permanent or temporary I think a removeable bracket would be a better option

There are rules in the construction and use regulations regarding the strength of mountings for fuel tanks, or at least there are for gas tanks. They will need to be able to stand a certain g force in 3 different axis (up/down, side/side, front/back).

I would doubt that the spare wheel winch would meet the regs as a holding clamp.

Just noticed that you are down under so the above may not apply as they are the UK regs. I would have thought that you will have something similar though

I think he's saying he will use a circular gas tank as it will fit the space/shape, BUT will fill it with Diesel not gas Wink

Thanks for the comments - so I assume from these no one does know the design lifting and holding parameters of winch.

I have considered most of the points raised but without specific specs of the winch I might have to look at other options and use the winch as a supplementary retraint.

Cheers
