Spending money in US of A

Heading over the pond for 3 weeks.

Looking for best suggestions on how to spend money over there. Don't want to take loads of cash.

Looking for the cheapest way. Hopefully most purchases will be by card, but we will need to get cash out occasionally.

Credit Card,
Debit Card,
Pre paid Debit card
Prepaid credit card

Already checked, and our debit cards will incur charges, and subject to variable exchange rates.

Any body got ideas?

+1 for Halifax.. No Overseas currency fees. Just make sure you do NOT allow the shop to apply the charge in GBP! If you do they set their own exchange rate!

Oh.. and you get cashback as a wee bonus Thumbs Up

Revolut Card is the best I have found.
its normally £10 for a card but I have a few free codes so you'll save £10

Ive had Caxton and FairFX but Revolut and the app you get with it are really good and very good exchange rates.

I was in the US 18 times last year and didn't take cash once. I use AMEX and take a hit on the charges. They really aren't that much and such a small percentage of your holiday spend.

I've been in Japan all week and took £50 of Yen out. I still have £35 and fly home tomorrow.

Just use a card, preferably a credit card for the protection, and take a small amount with you. You can always get more out from a cash machine if need be.

With Starling I love the integration with the tech. It’s great when watch or phone beeps you know it has gone through. Halifax had a couple of hiccups in Japan, Starling was the backup for big bills and worked a treat every time.

... and that leads to an important point - never rely on just 1 card when overseas. Belt and 2 sets of braces - it's amazing how common it is (for me at least Whistle ) for one or another card to have problems.

I work on 3 cards of mine, plus a no fee debit card in SWMBO’s name and not linked to mine. Though all Mastercard. I need to sort out a Visa card as in a couple of countries I was going through there were transport discounts for tickets booked through Visa cards.

Also I reorganise my physical and Apple Pay wallets so that the right cards are the default cards and the UK only credit card (fees for transactions) is in a section of wallet that I don’t normally use. Means I don’t pull out the wrong plastic when in autopilot mode.

Thanks all.

Looking into them.

Also saw a Mastercard with EasyFX. Its a pre load version. No charges for anything unless you use it in the UK. Load it up with GBP, then choose your destination currency. All converted at same time, and then no transaction or ATM fees. Lasts 3 yrs, and no monthly annual charge. Can switch currencies whenever you want. Obviously the exchange rate is a bit more favourable to them, as they need to make some money somewhere.

Might have left it a bit late for a bank account version.
