Stalled Auto D3 off road
I wonder if anyone else has experienced this?
Moderately steep hill ( approx 1:4) on wet grass
GGS low range and "D" selected.
Slowly accelerated on to hill from a level area.
Revs rise to approx 2500rpm, car feels like it is bogging and should change down ( engine bogging not wheels)
Engine eventually stalls.
Selected neutral restarted engine, then selected reverse and came back off the hill.
A second attempt with more of a "drive it like you stole it" setting worked fine and we got up.
Anyone any idea of why this happened?
Cheers

Here's a previous explanation

It's reverse torque through the transmission - with a 'normal' auto this wouldn't happen, the D3 has an electronically controlled auto box which will keep the TC locked up as long as possible to maintain engine braking, keeping the revs at 950-1000 will prevent this

Cheers DG
On hols at the mo so access limited.
Not sure this is the explanation,as once on the hill, the throttle was buried in the carpet, and there was no kick down. I assumed the TC was locked allowing the engine to stall, but was wondering if the GGS program was preventing use of 2nd gear.
If landowner permits, I will try it again using 2 instead of D to see what happens.
I would have expected the TC to unlock before the engine stalled as I was certainly "requesting" more than 950 rpm.

Stalled auto few times, if wheels are travelling forward but you are going back it will say "Woooooooooh, better stall so the nut behind the wheel can get himself sorted out! ".
In those situations I use D as car knows better than me what gear to use.

Well I was able to revisit the same climb, with the same conditions, and she went up sweetly with no drama.
Must have been a Disco 3 hissy fit!
Tried it is CS 2nd, and if anything there was more tendency to break traction.
Cheers

Stalling Disco
I had the same problem in sand and a slipery wet rocky climb. we went to Kosi Bay (SA Noth coast) the one dune was quite a distance to travel up nothing to serious, manual V6 pajero in front of me went up no problem.
I selected low range D and sand mode burried the throttle. I almost reached the top and it stalled. I tried highrange sand mode 1st gear same thing same place.
rocky climb it stalled on me twice but O was able to complete the obstacle. I'll post a video of both tonight2012 Discovery 4 SDV6 SE 50mm Suspension Lift, Front Runner RR, Drawers, Tuffstuff Underbody Armour.

I thought that putting the Terrain Response into GGS always started the car off in 2nd gear anyway when using "D".
As Del say's, the D3 doesn't like going backwards when it's going forwards.....going up the hill with a touch more speed usually stops this from happening. (It's happened to me, but not very often)2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE AutoBuckingham Blue 2007 Golf GT DSG

Or just enough throttle. To push forward without breaking grip and some in reserve if need to hoof it. Sometimes if all 4 wheels turning you need to back off a bit and re-estsblish control. Well that's the theory!

GGS is the wrong TR setting for climbing a hill, restricts power and minimises kickdown which probably contributed to the stall. Use Mud/ruts if the hill is wet or sand if it's loose gravel etc and turn off DSC too as this can kill the revs if you get wheelspin 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto
