starting problem

My 55 plate D3 (130K) has always not started well when cold on the first turn of the key, it spins over really well (new battery), when it fires though it doesn't catch on and run, I have to give it some throttle to catch it otherwise it just dies, if I catch it on he throttle then it starts and all is well, it runs really well, plenty of power and no smoke. its ok when warmed up however the outside temp doesn't make any difference, as in its been the same all summer, no worse and no better Mad

Its annoying more than anything however it could be a sign of impending doom (maybe LPFP)?

Any thoughts anyone Question

A diagnostic session to review the live data values will provide some direction.

I’ve got an IID and there are no codes that relate to starting, just EGR’s (Blanked) and a couple that say communication lost to suspension, although it all works fine.

It’s odd as once it’s started it’s fine until next morning, I wondered if it was some sort of fuel pressure issue, ie not enough there on first start of the day? Although I don’t really know what I’m talking about. As I said it isn’t an issue.....at the moment Whistle

Thanks Dan, text me tomorrow Thumbs Up

always starts (at the moment) and runs fine so I'm guessing not glow plugs, just wont catch on its own without the throttle Sad Sad

IID live values - Graph the fuel rail pressure, engine rpm and throttle position during engine cranking.

Agree with Alan_T a comprehensive diagnostic session should provide some direction. I can't see it being glow plug related as the problem is there all year around, and the glow plugs are only active below a predetermined ambient temperature. So no glow plugs on a warm day but obviously its still a hard start.

If as Morepower says it has always been a problem I would suggest looking at the fuel filter. As its an early D3 I have seen these fitted with the fuel lines wrong way around! Beyond that the fuel filter itself may need changing. If not that I would also start looking at the LPFP in the absence of dtc's.

Just had a service with a new filter, no difference! Dan1720v did some work a while back, he is going to have a look for me, I don't want to just change parts for the sake of it< I have got an IID so I might look at the live values at the weekend and post up what they are

Thanks for your thoughts so far guys Thumbs Up
