Strange noise

I've been hearing what can be best described as a very distant explosion (from the vehicle not the surroundings), probably since I first had the D4. My thoughts have been that it's probably the normal noise from one of the two turbos, but I thought I'd ask around before the D4 goes in for its first service in November.

The noise doesn't happen all the time and when it does, it seems to happen immediately after moderate-to-hard acceleration, but not after hard acceleration. I think it happens when I lift off the accelerator.

Hi Highlandcow,
If it was an old petrol-engined car I would suspect that it was a backfire. Shocked

Have you fitted a "power" chip? (It sounds like overfuelling.)

Alternatively, the injector timing may be off.

Hopefully, someone else will come up with better ideas,

Hi Peter

I've not fitted a power chip: it's a standard 3.0 V6.

The sound is very muffled, hence my description of "distant explosion". It's just one of those annoying things that probably won't be repeatable on demand for the garage mechanic.

I don't know if its possible, but perhaps noise from one of the 2nd turbo's solenoids when closing.

I'm curious to know what makes the growl / clatter from mine from low down on the LHS of the engine when I use reasonable throttle at quite low revs, perhaps around 1500rpm. Maybe its just V6 exhaust noise from the engine doing some work and exitting only via the primary turbo.
