To get back to the original question, I had a similar problem with a smart car a few years ago. The clock in the radio would freeze and the radio would not work in freezing conditions until the car had warmed up. I think that the smart and Discovery radios are both made by Grundig so it may be the same problem. I eventually replaced the radio in my smart with a similar but slightly later version which cured the problem.

I think these are just ghosts in the machine caused by low battery. On monday, mine suddenly decided it didn't have TMC, so it had a red slash. After a restart, TMC came back, but all my stored voice phone numbers had vanished. These didn't come back. Dr. Ian Malcolm:
