Happily making progress (70mph ) along the M3 this evening in toasty comfort while the temp was showing -5 outside. I had to slow down behind some other traffic and when I eased off the accelerator there began an almighty vibration. It was a bit like all the weights had dropped off the wheels but much worse. First thought was a tyre problem but it certainly felt expensive. I was down below 50mph before it became drivable (and my vision returned!) so I limped a mile to the next exit to take a look away from the hard shoulder.
Nothing - the tyres were still inflated, everything looked in order and I couldn't see anything hanging off the bottom? What was clear was I picked up an amazing amount of ice all around the car just from the motorway spray. There were icicles hanging all around the front and when I kicked the mud flaps, huge chucks of ice fell into the road.
In short, when I restarted I discovered that the problem had disappeared? All was balanced and back to it's usual smooth ride. I can only assume the vibration was caused by ice build-up somewhere underneath and I'd inadvertently kicked it off of melted it by standing still for 10 minutes or so. Thing is, I'm now puzzled by where ice could build up at 70mph+ to cause such a severe vibration. I've never experienced this problem before.
Anyone else had anything similar who could shed a light? 2005 D3 HSE

the only time I experienced something similar was when the N/S/R brake shoe was over adjusted during a summer trip to france, could be similar but with a build up of frozen ice/salt grit.
best check the rear hubs for discolouration int morning (redish colour of they've got hot) or periodically feel the wheels after a reasonable trip to see whether any of them are hotter than the others

You might be onto something there as i've recently had new rear discs and pads. I'll certainly check as you say, thank you.

Crews, i had the same problem yesterday as i got onto the M25. Same as you i pulled over, kicked the build up of snow from the mud flaps then noticed my N/S front wheel had a lot of snow and ice built up on the rim. Got rid off it and it was fine after that
As character says tho, check your rear hubs just in case PRIDE OF NORTH LONDON

I've found that a small dog standing on the hill descent control button just before you back off can cause a severe drain on the pacemaker battery until you realise what is going on !!!

THFC, I'm glad it's not just me... it does feel like ice building on a wheel - thank you.

I too was driving down the M3 last night, didn't see you hopping about the road Weird how isolated you feel from the conditions around you when it's 21degrees in the car & -5 outside!!
We used to find when mud had built up on the inside of the wheel rims uniformly, & then a chunk fell off it would cause a huge imbalance, perhaps ice could have done the same?
Regards
