I've had the same noise for a while now - it's starting to increase very noticably.

The three 'possible' culprits that I've had listed to me are:

1. Belt pre-tensioner

2. PS pump

3. A/C compressor

Mine is in next week for them to investigate - if / when I get an answer I'll post on here.

I had a similar noise to described last year which did actually turn out to be the A/C compressor, I could vary the noise slightly by turning the aircon on or off if that helps..
 and theeeeennn......???

I've had both 1 & 3 suddenly fail on me.
On each occassion I didn't notice any additional noise beforehand.

I think TazDaz has had/ still has a similar problem. Likes Land Rover diagnosed and replaced a belt tensioner whilst he was down there for the 'Snowy' Boughrood weekend recently. However, the noise was still there and they then diagnosed the air con compressor which they didn't have in stock/was on back order.

I believe the air con compressor is now being replaced this coming week by TazDaz's local dealer. If he sees this post no doubt he will correct me and/or report whether the air con compressor replacement has cured the noise

Just a quick update....

Had a call from the dealer - while having my MoT done I asked them to investigate the noise. They've diagnosed the noise as the PS pump. A replacement has been ordered and will be fitted next week under warrenty.

Once done I'll report back on things.

Water pump, Aircon Pump and various pulleys/tensioners all on the suspect list. Aircon Pump pulley doesn't go quiet when you turn A/c off...... as I've found out on two cars now Whistle
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Mine is the power steering pump as diagnosed by 10forCash. Unfortunately it was not a job to be done easily at our house so it is of to TLO to be done next week.

Can I point you to my last post, username Baloo. I have a similar noise, possibly. Perhaps mine is related to yours but in its early stages as it appears to go away after about 30mph, possibly overwhelmed by road noise. This is possibly related, I hope so, I have discovered how to turn off engine management lights by turning the ignition key to the last point before ignition, 5 times. It apparently works for all sorts of faults.
The light still came back on again the next day so the problem is obviously on going.
Regards
Baloo

Glad we are not alone, also have a whine up front (insert wife joke here) that I asked dealer to look at two weeks ago, they heard, reset the transmission software (!) but its still there and seems to be worse yesterday when it was warmer.

We don't use the A/C on auto over the winter unless its really wet'n'steamy so wondering if its A/C, PS pump or the tension - belt seems a bit loose to my taste for one that long, but I am no expert having only adjusted alternator belts on small cars back in the day.

Going into dealer again next week, already suggested it might be the belt, have to see what they say.

Wife 7+ months pregnant, just don't want anything to fail while she is using the car, especially the PS pump....
