Strange whine... (follow on from my first engine fault)

So following on from my post the other day with the engine going into limp home mode, I have been listening & watching perhaps more intently than usual.

When I pulled back on the motorway, i turned the radio down & the fan & was able to clearly hear a whine noise.

So I've checked if it's engine or transmission related. Definately engine related, you can hear it if you rev the engine whilst stationary.

The whine goes up with the engine revs and is variable as it changes gear. Once over about 65, it's more difficult to hear it, but that is just because of the MTR's, RAI and cross bars.

It's not like the viscous fan 'roar' that you get on startup, it's definately more like a bearing whine.

Any ideas or most likely culprits?

Have you checked the belt pre-tensioner?
Could be bearings on their way out.

So you know what your looking for, there's a pic of a knacked one in my gallery.

From memory it was clearly audible from the right front wheel arch of your motor Derek - but I could be wrong Whistle

Here's the photo Ron mentioned:

So is that the bit that is bottom left without a belt touching it in that pic?

It would certainly look like it, BUT, the only thing is the mounting point.
In my photo it's got a bolt head on the surface.
But in the Matt_tdv6 pic that is the mounting facing ???
Unless my old part had the bolt put in on the wrong side ??

Don't have the old part now to check, as I binned it!

edit - added
But the way it's mounted on Matts pic would explain why I got my D3 the 85 miles home without losing the pulley.
There were no bearings left, but it couldn't fall off.

Looking at the shape of the markings left on your bit Ron, I reckon they've put the bolt in the other way just to not lose it. The lugs on the bit that should face the engine and the paper or calc stuff on the face seems to point in that direction. Thumbs Up

We will have to compare noises on Monday evening Bods, have a whine together Rolling Eyes Mine went in Wednesday morning, they thought it was power steering pump, this turned out to be a bigger job than they thought and I picked it up Thursday afternoon, anyway after they changed the pump the noise is still there, so I need to book it in again for "a few days so we can find out what the problem is" so if I could give them some idea where to look it may save some time.
