Stuck in the mud!

A most embarrassing episode....

Yesterday I took my new to me Disco 3 TDV6 out on a tour. On the way back I went to collect a flat bed car transporter trailer which was parked up in a grassy field on a farm.

I drove into the field no problems, stopped in front of the trailer selected Reverse and then promptly stopped. All wheels turning but not going anywhere. Had to be towed out by a tractor, not ideal for my 1st time off road in it.

The problem is the tyres. The car has the standard Pirelli Scorpions on, but they are worn down to 3-4 mm of tread, they were useless.

I'm now looking for some new ones, I hear the General Grabber is pretty good?!

Thanks
James

Yes, it seems very good feedback on the GGAT, I have seen them on Geoff's D3, and a few others and they look very impressive.

I am even considering changing my MTR's for a set

Hi James

Sorry to hear of your embarrassment.

I have the Geneal AT's and they have been great in the snow and mud.

AJS4x4 is the place to go.

Tyre choice may not make any difference. As an old member on here is fond of saying, when there's no traction, there's no traction! I've had to be towed out by a tractor couple of times and was on MTRs. No 4x4 is invincible, trick is not to put it in a position where it does get stuck. Get yeah to a LRE centre for some training if you are going to drive off the tarmac again. Thumbs Up

Well after the weekend in Wales, I can confirm that GG AT's are just as poo as every other tyre when the going gets boggy!

In boggy mud only a set of very aggressive mud terrain tyres will really stand a chance, AT's will struggle in these conditions.

I can confirm we tested most types of tyre this weekend on the campsite and the scorps did just as well as any other , one tip is to de air the tyres to about 15 or 20 psi worked for MrH Thumbs Up

Seems about right for the rule-of-thumb that a vehicle fully mired requires a pull of four times its deadweight. So I'm glad to see evidence of the front recovery point pulling against two D3s at least, as I'm not yet convinced it will take 12 tons.
