I'm not sure how you got to that point.

Towbar removal starts by penetrating fluid, holding the lock in the unlock position and drifting the lock tongue home from the spare wheel side. Once the lock is clear of the aperture a deadblow hammer does the rest.

Ok I'm worried now

Right I've got a key but it don't fit my lock. I have a tow bar that's been left on so Im guessing it's seized. The dealer said it was on when they took it in part exchange. So it's obviously been in for some time. and the ball bearing bit worries me. If I try to take it off tomorrow by hammering the pin back am I gonna be shot with a ball bearing.

I've tried soaking in WD40 no joy the green handle on it just turns round 360 and keeps going can anyone explain how I get it off so I can throw it a mile and buy a new one.

If it moves and it shouldn't duct tape it, if it doesn't move and it should walk away and get a big hammer

Take it to a Land Rover dealer and ask them to do the tow bar recall check on it.

No guarantee it has seized at all. As you will have seen the bit that fits inside is a gentle taper, but what holds it in place is the big springloaded stainless steel pin that goes into a hole inside the reciever. The green handle (which should not rotate all the way round) winds the stainless pin back out, and the key lock is just a way of ensuring the green knob is back into the starting position as that's the only spot to get the key out.

So, if it is plugged in and locked in place why do you need to remove it to tow?

I didn't trust it to tow and wanted to remove it to replace it. Today I took the green handle off unscrewed the red cap and pulled the gear out with the spring. I then drove it out the back and it's dropped off s I will get a new one and grease it properly. I'm only going to be towing a small 650-750kg trailer so it won't be stressed.

new lock set 18 quid last time I got one...as for taking the key out when off the vehicle just press the small pin against something to fire off the lock//better for storeage with key out
