On the inner track rods, I used a pipe tool (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pipe_wrench).

really was straight forward, slid the cover to one side and undid with the tool. same in reverse. As I took the inners and outers off all at the same time, I measured the old ones against the new ones for the correct length, and while I did take it for tracking, they were pretty much spot on.
