Summer Tyres
What makes a tyre a summer tyre ?
I've just been looking at some BF Goodrich A/T's, but they're listed as summer tyres, does this mean they're no good for winter - seems a bit odd

Where are you looking at them? Some of the tyre sellers don't list correctly.Richard

If it can't pass the winter tyre rating test then it's a summer tyre, I guess.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Prob technically no such thing as summer tyres, just winter and “all else”. I ran ATs or muds on my D3 & D4 through a good few severe Highland winter and only had issues if I pushed the limits when I prob should have stayed in. Whilst AT type tyres are prob better than road tyres in snow, they’ll be nowhere near as good as proper winters in all cold conditions, not just snow. Winters are much better all round once the temps get into single digit temps and below. I ran AT types because of off-roading I was doing, winters are in any mud whatsoever, but I now run winters on my present 4x4 and will keep them on until prob April.

My idea was to have a second set of wheels / tyres for green laning, but which also could be used if we get a bad winter.

There are now winter-rated AT tyres that are better again in winter conditions. Still not as good as a winter road tyre, of course, on wintery tarmac. Hugely more capable away from tarmac, of course.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Grabber AT3, Pirelli AT+ , BFG T/A KO2 are all winter-rated (carry the 3pmsf symbol).
I've used the first two all year round but not the last one as it's not available in 19inch.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk
