Suspension Fault - advice required please

Hello,

Over this past few weeks I have been getting a 'suspension fault' error display on the dash. Drive under 30mph etc. with the suspension light illuminated ! yellow under 30mph & red over 30mph.

If I turn of the ignition & remove the key then it seems to reset itself & all works fine for either 5 minutes or a few days. If the fault is NOT being displayed the D3 air suspension will raise & lower no problem. Even when the fault is displayed the D3 seems to drive fine (but I have only owned it a few months).

The D3 in question is 2006 D3 HSE with 59k miles. Is there any simple checks I can make before I take it to a dealer ? From reading this forum on suspension faults the dealer may replace unnecessary parts. i.e. the compressor when the fault may simply be a height adjustment sensor. I don’t even have a clue where this sensor is located.

Also thanks to this forum I have fixed a jammed sunroof & also a leaking sunroof !

What wonderful vehicles ! Can anyone recommend independent garages in N. Ireland who work at D3’s (preferably North West area) ?

Thanks in advance.

Could possibly be a knackered height sensor. Mines is in at the moment getting one replaced as well as a couple of other bits. If the compressor was faulty then you would have issues raising the car and possibly have it sitting at a weird angle overnight.

If the fault is still i the alarm log that they can read then it should be straight forward. I also think that the new one would need to be calibrated, but don't quote me on that.

Do you have the 4x4 info on the satnav screen,if so when it is showing a fault have a look on the screen and see if there are any red lights above any of the wheels, this will indicate if there is a faulty sensor and which wheel.

You cant see the red light in the "bad" photo below but you can see that the wheel is out of place

The white line above the wheel flashes red.

I do have the 4x4 info on the sat nav screen & from memory there are no red lights & no wheels displayed out of place. I will carry a digital camera in the car & take a picture of the sat nav screen the next time I get the suspension fault error…. No doubt this will be tomorrow !

If the 4x4 sat nav screen is not showing a red light or wheel out of place, does this mean that the problem is not a faulty sensor..... therefore a more expensive repair ?

Thanks,

I recently had similar problems with my compressor, it was eventually replaced using TFC with my Warrany Direct policy (put claim in last week, still waiting for cheque).

As for the sunroof... to reset it, press and hold the close button (with the key in position 1) until the sunroof cycles through a full open and close movement, release the button, turn the key off then turn to position 2 - sorted!

Also there are various threads relating to clearing out the sunroof drains... search 'leaking sunroof' and you'll find plenty... but check here first...

Hi ah,

This could be a broken brake light switch, mine was giving the same symptoms: down to the bump stops, not raising, red suspension light and 30 km/h warning.

A dealer with the proper testing equipment will diagnose this in a couple of minutes.

regards,

Wiljo

There was no suspension fault warning during the school run this morning.
Having read the post above I checked to see if the brake lights were working & it turned out that both the NS & FS lights were not working. The centre light above the rear window was working. I replaced the bulbs & the brake lights are now working so I assume the brake light switch is working. If a bulb blows in a D3 is this not reported on the dash display ?

I live in the mad hope that now I have replaced the brake light bulbs that maybe the suspension fault error will not return Confused

I hope you're right, but the brake lights working does not neccessarily mean the brake light switch is fine. OTOH replacing the switch (if that *is* the problem) took less time than getting it from the shelves at the dealer, so no costly repair.

Wiljo

Hi Wiljo,
I doubt very much if I have fixed the problem... Thats just me living in complete hope Laughing
I'll just have to wait for the error to return & take it from there.
If I was to purchase one of those FaultMate FCR devices would this tell me the exact problem or could it also misdiagnose?

On another note, & this has occurred since I purchased the vehicle:
When I lower the suspension to 'access height' (from on road height when stationary) the D3 lowers & then straight away it raises to 'off road height'
Should it not stay in 'access height' until I manually adjust it or reach a certain speed ?
Thanks,

This is one of the problems I had with mine. The car wouldn't stay in access height and would give an error message in the info centre along the line of 'clear obstruction and reset height'. When TFC initially came to diagnose the problem there were no fault codes stored in the ECU as the car 'thought' it was behaving appropriately. This began intermittantly, getting worse over time. Eventually getting red warnings and speed restrictions. I had the compressor changed last month and it's been fine since.

It should.
Keep us posted, always interesting to have symptoms, cause and fix documented on here.
