Suspension Fault - Intermittent |
|
My D3 has just started randomly throwing up Suspension Faults. Driving along the road at speed and them “bling” Amber suspension fault. Pull over, Turn car off, start it again gone for another 10 mins and then it does it again.
Seems to be quite happy raising and lowering most of the time (although had a few problems today in the soft sand where it told me the vehicle would raise when the system cooled down, and even got the Red light).
Any ideas would be welcome

Could be a few things but with the age of the car the chances are the air drier has never been changed or serviced (its not a service item ) but with age the silicon beads harden and compact, the compressor has to work harder to draw sufficient air in, this makes it overheat. If you catch it quick enough changing the beads or the air drier unit can avoid a new compressor. It worked with my 2005 SE 18months ago and its still going strong (touch wood!)
ps welcome Frank

Does the compressor turn off after a few minutes or does it keep running?
First step would be to check for an air leak. If there is one, the compressor will be having to work harder and therefore overheat.
Simplest way I found was to pull the fuse under the bonnet to stop self levelling and see if it sinks overnight.
It could be any of the valves, pipes, or drier bit of the compressor ( quite common on older compressors I believe)
There's loads of posts on here regarding the issues. Just search for air suspension
You could always plug it in and see what the galley pressure and other compressor readouts are like too 1995 Discovery 1 300TDI

how long needed to switch from normal height to offroad height, if it's not quick, most probably there is a air leakage somewhere or air compressor does not push the air as fast as needed to the air suspension system

The back goes up immediately but the front is very slow. (Recently replaced the back shockers with D4 ones)

this confirm you have problem either in
1. front valve
2. center valve
3. air compressor itself
If you to garage they might not waste their time but simply ask you to replace those 3 things
However if you want to spend more time to investigate
Check from air compressor itself (the most expensive part), if there is leakage using soapy water
Check drier part of air compressor where it deliver air to center valve
But if u want straight forward solution, simply replace at least center valve and air compressor
this is DIY job

Bit more of an update... it seems that the front left is running lower than the rest of the system. Also after about 2 hours goes from 820mm (at wheel arch) to 785mm. All the rest stay at or around 850mm

Sounds like the valve block and seals are not working as they should!
Probably due to the dessicant breaking down and getting into the system..
Pull the fuses and relay AND 3 fuses (inc the one in the glove box) This disables the Self Leveling - and it allows you to isolate the issue..
Measure the suspension heights. Leave overnight and re-measure the next day.
Try a seal kit from: original_landyair Ebay User ID original_landyair

I have found the problem. It appears thT the airbag in the front left shock has let go.
Are there any tricks to replacing the shocker that I should know about?

Use a long 15mm spanner for the top 3 nuts.
Drop out the shock part way before you disconect the air line. This makes it much easier to get access and to remove the air union. 1 TR6 Rusting away quietly
