he"ll be taking the rubber off the rims next to save weight. all .005% of it
wonder if the ride will be affected.

The roof lining has been looking a bit weighty recently. Doesn't seem to do much either - I've been watching it..... Disco 5 HSE Lux

Mass dampers are found in many vehicles from Ford, Mazda, Nissan, Toyota, Mercedes to name but a few I found..
The only reference to them from LR is
Quote:Land Rover's Integrated Body-frame construction marries a hydroformed-steel ladder frame to a highly rigid monocoque body. The benefits are exemplary collision performance, efficient packaging, the stiff platform needed for superior handling and maneuverability, and a composed cabin environment. Miniature dampers between the frame and body at mounting points and a tuned mass damper located at each corner of the vehicle help block the transmission of noise, vibration, and road harshness into the passenger cabin. 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I seem to remember the Renault F1 Team being in trouble a couple of seasons ago because of something to do with illegal mass dampers , so not so low tech then after all

i didnt think you could take them off with out lifting the body off its mountings but i may be wrong. the only problem i see is in a few years when the rubber mounts are worn out, they look a bit of a pain to swap

Come on Dom stop being a dullard ...don't you know you'll save about 30kgs and that will make a considerable difference given that the motor weighs over 2700kgs

ok you rumbled me.
i was trying to explain to the experts at my landrover garage what they are and what they do.
many thanks for the genuine responses and to the rest who believe that harmonic dampers are a band from the 80's

Yes but how to they work ?
The section in Wikipedia gives a reasonable explanation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuned_mass_damper
Thanks, great link. Nice to know that in my D3 I'm protected against earthquakes and .... wind
Did notice a little kick from the suspension occasionally when starting at a junction and turning sharply, thought it might be transmission related, but could be these.
Just goes to show that the D3 is the dog's danglies. There's one wheel on my wagon, but i'm still rollin' along, it's the cherokee, they're after me, but I'm singing a happy song

from Wikipedia ... Almost all cars will have one mass damper, some may have 10 or more.
well well, I never knew that !!!

They appear to be just free swinging - so at odds as to how they actually work.
Bythbusters demonstrated Nikola Telsa's Earthquake machine recently to prove that a 6lb weight (attached to an almighty steel bridge) moving in simple harmonic motion at the right frequency, can actually make the bridge resonante at the same frequency. That is, the entire bridge structure starts to vibrate at the same frequency. Tesla's theory that it would eventually destroy the bridge was proven wrong, but the 6lb weight moving at the right frequency caused a motion in the bridge similar to a larch truck moving along it. The dampers on the D3 do the opposite to the 6lb weight by cancelling out (absorbing) any vibrations that come up through the suspension and chassis... as others have said.. been around since cocky was an egg and cannot be more effectively controlled with anything else.... So keep up the good work LR.
If it's weight you want to save mdm then remove the unused seats (these weight about 30kg each , or perhaps the chassis that's attached to the monocoque shell. surely one of these is redundant? What's the point.... it all comes out in the wash anyway!
