Synthetic winch line length

I'm planning on ordering some synthetic line for my wench in the comming days. It orginally came with 100' of 5/16" wire the winch is rated for 8820 single line pull. I'm looking to replace it with 5/16" synthetic rope, I'm just not sure on the length I should get.

Should I get it a bit shorter so I dont have to pull out so much line to get to the drum for max pull and just get an extention line for long pulls? Or just get a long length? whats the advantages of having a long length on the spoll as opposed to shorter length on the spoll with an extention?

As I understand it, the more full your line is, the quicker (because of the bigger diameter) you will be able to winch in.
Personally, logic says stick with the 100 (assuming it has the same strength?) and only pull out half of it, then use extensions as required?

I'm sure someone with more winching experience than I will be along shortly.... Wink

Well I was thinking shorter because the "pull" is closer to the center of the drum so it is less work for the winch and less draw on the battery, plus the winch is kind of on the small end for the weight of D3. It came off a Jeep wrangler wich is alot lighter. But my dad has always told me you can never have a rope that to long..

Problem with fitting a short rope on your winch it will not give you much length should you need to double line winch. As you say the winch may be undersize for the D3 you will more than likely have to use a double line pull for the winch to be effective. Cannot see any advantage to a shorter rope I would stick with the standard length

I got about 30m / 100' on my G4. It is OK on a straight pull but a liitle much if the pull is not completely straight.

I should put 80ft of 11mm on it if you are just using it for self recovery and not for comps. The trouble with using a longer line is it bunches at the ends and snaps if not on straight or spooled onto a hidden winch. This sounds easy to do but you will always find that whatever you use to pull off is never straight ahead in the real world. I shouldn't get tempted to go for a longer lenght as it is just as easy to add a strop or two to get to where you want to be. The cost ( and RPITA if hidden)of replacing the line because of damage exceeds the short time it takes to add a strop if you are just using it for "fun". I used to use a hidden xp on the rear of my comp car and i can tell you the rope never snaps in a dry sunny location only in the biggest wet dirt hole for miles and dissapears into the drum, never to be seen again for hours when your hands are cold and wet. If you are using an xp ? may i suggest that you have a lug welded on the drum as the grub screw just makes the rope chaff on side pulls. Learn to use it well and take your time and rope lasts a long time. Abuse it and it becomes a great money pot that will force you to change your bad habbits! 8)
