Big Carl
If you need to, you could actually take the front seats out completely.
Move them forward and up to get to the Seat belt bolt, then move them back and down to make them smaller to get out.
Then take the plastics off where required and unbolt it. lean it back to make it easier to access and undo the electrical connector from under the front. The connector has a small retaining bolt.
Then you can lift them out, cover your cubby box and slide the Dog box all the way forward pretty much right up to the steering wheel.

Hi there. I just registered myself today.
My Disco 3 2006 TOP TAILGATE won't open!
When I pressed the button to open the top tailgate nothing happens (no noise).
I've managed to use the emergency back up procedures (Press both lock/unlock buttons) to open and both top & bottom operated normally so seems that is not the cable system.
Can anybody help?
Thanking you in advance.

This is usually caused by the switch corroding in the tailgate handle. Strip and clean it, should resolve the problem. Mods:

Good day Narpy.
Thanks for your quick reply.
You just confirmed my thoughts.
If you have any video/link, etc, that shows how to stip the Tailgate handle I would appreciate if you could share.
This would help me to be prepared before I work on it.
Thanks again.

Sorry no video.
Pull the rubber boot off the switch under the rear door handle and you'll soon suss out how it works.
Rubber boot is tricky to put back, but you'll be ok. Mods:

I think Ive read that much about the tailgate problems / fixes, I've confused myself !!…(mind you wouldn't be hard for me )
Heres my problem, if someone would be kind enough to diagnose :-
Intermittent problem with upper tailgate not opening.
Sometimes you press button and it releases, other times you hear the noise as if its going to but doesn't, and sometimes no noise and no release.
I've tried pressing two buttons together from dash but this appears not to work anytime.
I have had the other problem with the L end cable release snapping which I repaired.
So, is my problem the upper tailgate actuator, the upper tailgate latch switch or perhaps a wiring issue ??
By coincidence, the rear passenger door lock is becoming "lazy", its working intermittently as well.
Any thoughts ………... you need the bad times to appreciate the good..........

If you can hear the actuator working when you press the button it suggests the problem is either the cable between the actuator and the latch, the latch itself (unlikely) or the actuator running out of puff. You will need to open it up to check the cable and if OK I suggest replacing the actuator.
Geoff. on here apparently does a stronger one which I intend to order.

Mines stopped working off the remote control in the last couple of days? I can't any solenoid noise either when pressing the remote.
However the tailgate opens perfectly fine using the switch under the tailgate grab handle... Any ideas chaps? It's better to burn out, than fade away...

I could hear the clicking from the switch , so thought it was the cable connection. The L bracket is intact and when activated it pulls the cable about 10mm. This did not appear to be strong enough or long enough movement to release it. I tried pulling the cable and that does not release the upper tailgate without pulling on the handle quite a bit at the same time. So I am thinking it is the catch on the lower tailgate which the upper tailgate fixes onto. Tried cleaning it up but there does not appear to be any spring in the catch and it just does not feel right.
It has got dark now, so have left it until tomorrow. Anyone know how the actual lock part comes off ?. It can't be any more difficault than getting to the actual actuator , can it ?. Also is about 10mm movement on the actuator correct or should I replace that at the sme time .
Thanks to all who have posted on this already.

Easy to remove the latch, just remove the 3 bolts visible from the top of the lower tailgate when in the closed position and it will drop out inside the tailgate. You will obviously need to remove the panel covering the actuator first and get the tailgate open.
I'd still bet it is the actuator. Your symptoms are identical to mine and I went down this road of removing and cleaning the latch as it didn't seem to spring open when I manually pulled the cable. Turned out there is no spring open and the actuator just wasn't pulling the cable hard enough. New actuator from TLO and no problems since.

Thanks SuperEagles, given the messing around accessing the actuator I guess it makes sense to replace it while I have got access to it.

Hi, some clarification needed please. My actuator is lazy and it seems that I also have the old style cable which can break. As a preventative measure I want to cure this before it packs up. A couple of posts mention replacing the cable, at around £20-30 , however my dealer is saying cable is not available separately and comes only with the latch at more like £70. Is the cable something they used to do and now don't? If anyone has a picture of the later modified part I would also be grateful so I can check I have the better/later cable not an old stock item.
Many thanks

+1 for the allen key trick- I've spent the past 2 weeks crawling in through the rear seats to rummage around in the mobile cupboard-under-the-stairs that is my boot.
Some people seem to find the carpet panel removal trickiest- this was quite straighforward for me, the b*****d was getting hold of the loose cable end with one finger whilst pushing the plastic cover aside with the others. I could touch it but not get hold of it, which is more frustrating. After half an hour of unsuccessfully trying this this I got angry, jammed two bottles of beer that were rolling around the boot down either side to force the carpet bit aside and went for it with one final push.. and got it! The actual fix would have been 10 mins if not for the cable being tantalisingly out of reach. Thanks for the tips on this forum, guys.
