When you press the button to open the tailgate can you hear the actuator working or is there no sound at all? Filming something somewhere...

Press the lock and unlock button at the same time on the dashboard and hold them in. If it opens it is the button on the tailgate release, our's filled with water and stopped working.
You may need an assistant to open the tailgate while you do it

Push it closed and try again, you have to get the timing right or it catches. It does sound like the switch on the tailgate handle.
You have to remove the handle to access the micro switch and wiring. The handle is held on with 3 or 4 bolts under the inner tailgate trim and the 4 exposed star bolts on the lower part of the tailgate.
You can test the switch with a meter to see if it is working. On mine it was full of water.

Finally got it open by pressing lock and unlock. Shut it again and it wouldn't open so pressed lock and unlock again (and tailgate switch) and it opened. then just tried opening as usual and all seems fine! When wife gets back from the gym I will check the microswitch as you suggested. Another little Landrover mystery!! Thanks for your help countrywide.
On another note have to say that the D3 is a fantastic long distance tourer. Our trip from Palm Beach (Northern Sydney beaches) to our home on Mornington Peninsula was effortless. 2.7 D4 eDiff, Traxide Dual battery, Safari Snorkel...Opposite Lock winch bar..extra set 17" wheels with 245/70/17 BFG KM2 MTs..Warrior winch..Long range tank.
