tailgate failure which part/s to check |
|
Ok so my tailgate stopped opening some time ago, at the time I read all the articles under the sun and managed to open it from the inside. I now have a permanant hole in the trim with a zip tie sticking out.
I ordered a replacement part for the inside as mine had the typical broken L bend at the end of the cable, and for good measure I also ordered a new switch too from ebay.
Trouble is after less than a year it's gone again. Could it be the the ebay switch is not high quailty and has died, or have I got a faulty actuator or whatever the other bit is called?
I'm loath to buy a new switch from ebay only to find it's the same, but I'm also loath to remove all the trim again and check that the same L bend brake has not occured.
Is there any way to check the switch without actually replacing it for example? If I pull it out (probably brake it doing that which is what happened with the original), and I don't know, touch the two cables together should it work, or is there a way to bypass the switch either using the dash buttons or key fob?
If it's the switch then I'll just buy another but if it turns out to be the other bit I'll need to return it under warranty as it wasn't cheap. Thanks in advance

Hi
I replaced my broken "L" cable last week if you can hear the solenoid working when you push the button then these two bits are ok. these where ok on mine so I just replaces the cable and catch £82 inc vat on the shelf at tim fry's Cheltenham (he said I get through a lot of these). if the switch is broken see if the solenoid work if the wires to the switch are touched together if the solenoid works then its a new switch.
hope that helps

sorry buddy not really, but thanks.
The bit you describe replacing recently is also one that I have replaced. I hope that the replacement has not also broken.
I'm hoping there is a simple way to check if the problem is the switch first, and then I can buy a new one if it is, or investigate further if it is not. I know I can just buy another switch off ebay for a tenner and fine out but I'm already £100 out of pocket on this
Thanks

When you press the tailgate switch, what happens?
Can you hear the solenoid activating but the rear door fails to release? If this is the case, your cable end has broken again.
Can you partly release the tailgate by pressing the two dash buttons? If this is the case, your cable is not broken and your problem lies elsewhere. Mods:

Knocking bet your cable end has let go again.
Must say, that's pretty unfortunate if you did the swap out recently.
Hopefully you left the emergency pull cord in place. Mods:

“Problem lies elsewhere “
Where exactly !!!!?
I’m having similar problems,
Bottom half of my tailgate works perfect but the top one opens intermittently,
When I press the two buttons on the dash it partly opens but still unable to open ,
The micro switch on the upper tailgate also clicks but the tail gate won’t open .
If I leave it for a hour or go for a drive it opens ( most of the time ) .
As I said before the bottom half works perfectly.
Anyone got any words of wisdom before I waste money buying the wrong parts .
