can I ask what may seem like a daft question, does the cable "push" the actuator, or pull it? I spent several ours with my hands being lacerated by the darn thing this weekend and still can't pop it open. I can feel a very loose bit of cable in there, but can't seem to get anything to pop.
Should I be pulling that cable (towards off side) or trying to push the actuator inwards (towards the drivers/near side)?Previous: Defender 90, Disco 1 300TDi, 1976 Pontiac Trans-am 6.6 auto, 1975 Ford Gran Torino (S&H), 83 Trans-am (KITT), 83 Chevy G20 (A-Team van), 1972 RR Silver Shadow, 94 Camaro, 2001 Ford Crown Vic P71 "Sheriff" car, Ford F150 XLT Supercrew pickup and other assorted rust.....(Beetles, Minis, Scooby etc)

My D3 upper tailgate is difficult to get to catch have fitted a full height dog guard so if cable fails getting into the back will be a real problem. Wondering if a stitch in time saves issues any advice on how to adjust or what would people recommend? Thanks

I've got a a bog standard collapsible dog cage in mine far better than a guard which I use to have,it was a pain to take out when I wanted to drop the seats to carry any thing long or bulky,now I can put the cage flat in a couple of mins without taking the cage out of the car,something for you to consider

Yes the dog guard has its disadvantages but our dog who is seven came from rescue center when we picked him up he would not come within 50 meters of our car. I had to carry him never been in a cage so trying to get him in a cage in a car. We could never put him through being put in a cage in car. He is part of the family and reason for getting caravan so our holiday is for us all wife myself and dog

Yes I agree with you, my dog (and I love her to bits) was the same, but once they associate it for going for a walk etc they can't wait to get in because they know happy times to come

Many thanks for the how-to guide. Had a spare latch in my emergency spares box for years but now changed it on a precautionary basis as I have a dog guard in place most of the time.

D3 Tailgate actuator Fail with Black Widow Drawers fitted!
Hi All,
Am I the only guy who has had the standard actuator fail with a set of 4WD drawers in the back?! This actuator has failed once before and I tore myself to pieces sitting in the back doing the standard repair. Ne nice if I'd have dropped the manual release in....but I did not.
So which of you clever has a solution because I cannot see for the life of me how I'm going to solve it this time with the drawers in place. There's just so little room to work with now. Any new ideas. And yes, once I access it I'll be fitting a manual release!

Digging up an old thread but I've had this problem. Boot wouldnt open but could hear the actuator firing so I've pulled the trim off and released it. Just having a break before releasing the stays and removing the trim, but it doesn't feel like the cables snapped at the actuator end. I have small hands so was able to get in there to open in, and there was nothing loose or detached inside that black plastic cover (I nearly broke my finger pulling the cable it was that tight.
What could my issue be? I'm guessing its something at the latch end?

Also worth noting that the foam panel isn't there on mine, so someones been in there already!

Looks like the actual motor on the actuator is , it doesnt pull strong enough. Can this be fixed or shall I just replace the lot?

Just change the actuator, its a very simple job, I did mine this morning before it died completely. The old one was very weak, the new one was much stonger.

Thats what I did in the end, new ones way better. My tailgate sticks though still, so I probably need a new latch at some point, as I had to bodge the metal L clip like many others.

I had the usual tailgate problem and from advice on here decided a new actuator was needed. Ordered from AF, they call it a regulator, and fitted it this afternoon following DSL’s very good guidance at beginning of this thread. Now the tailgate opens like a kick from a mule so don’t know why I waited so long in getting it changed. Very easy job even for me. Thanks for all advice and DSL.
