Tailgate - precursor to bigger problems? |
|
Hi
I've had a search but can't find my specific issue.
A couple of times recently, I've been unable to open the upper tailgate, either from the fob or from the handle on the boot. Both times, there has been light pressure on the tailgate from stuff in the boot (I'm careful not to use the tailgate to ram contents into the boot when it's full).
In both cases, locking the car completely solved the problem; however, does this presage more serious issues to come? 2014 - D4 2010 HSE Nara Bronze

I would suspect the actuator is getting a bit lazy and the extra pressure on the door from inside it went on strike.
I remember i changed the actuator on one of my D3's when it became a little intermitent and could immediately hear the difference in the urgency between the two D3's so i changed the other before it started playing up.
I'm 99% certain that the actuators are the same for D3 & D4. Stu

Hi
I had a very similar issue with my D4 tailgate last week, I noticed it had been getting a little difficult to open over the last few weeks but after two or three attempts it would open, the same issue with the lower tailgate several pushes on the button and it would release.
I had a can of Land Rover spray lubricant so thought I would give the latches and locking pins a good spray and bingo both the tailgates release at the first touch of the button every time.
Maybe I was just lucky, but its worth a try as it costs nothing and may just work for you!
Good luck
Jim

I’m having the tailgate problems as well. just so I understand this correctly if I pres the keyfob I only hear a very feint click which I presume means the actuator is almost dead? I can only gain access by pressing the 2 dash lock/unlock buttons but after about 8 goes it goes dead and no reaction at all. Then I have to wait a while before trying again. Using the fob and LR button does not work at all.
So I if I buy and fit a new actuator do you think that will fix the problem? No idea how to do it but understand there are some good instructions on the forum.

OK so I just called AF to order an actuator and Paul asked me do I mean a regulator! Is the regulator and actuator the same thing as I'm delving in the dark here? I'm not even sure it is the actuator thats gone wrong so I'm working y way through parts.

If you haven't already replaced the latch then it may be a good idea to replace that at the same time. Stu

My Indy is about an hour's drive away - he does pick-up and drop-off, but he's looking at 4 hours out of his day for a one-hour job, so I don't feel I can ask him to do that.
So..... is there a guide somewhere on here which would show me how to replace it? 2014 - D4 2010 HSE Nara Bronze

If you can get the tailgate open then that's a massive part of that guide you can skip over.
Then it's a case of remove the lower tailgate edge trim, carpet panel, cut/peel the water shedder and swap the actuators (and reassemble).
The PITA bit is if it or the cable have failed and you can't open the tailgate. 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

I can open the tailgate - sometimes...
I'll look over it again - but I'm nervous about cutting anything. 2014 - D4 2010 HSE Nara Bronze

Stop using the key to open the tailgate, it sometimes causes the door switch thingy to stick
