Hi All,
I've searched and searched on tailgate latch problems and there are a TON that address the problem of the tailgate upper portion failing to open. However, I'm having the opposite problem- it won't stay fully closed and I haven't found anyone sharing this particular problem.
Problem:
No matter how firmly I close the upper portion of the tailgate, it won't stay fully latched. It will catch on the first notch of the latch so I don't have to worry about it flying open completely, but it won't catch on the second notch and be fully shut. Hence, I get a Tailgate Open message on the dashboard cluster.
Taking it to the dealer tomorrow but before I waste the morning with doing so, thought I'd check here to see if anyone knows of an easy fix.
Best,

I had this experience some days ago, all of a sudden the upper tailgate wouldnt close properly, it got stuck in a semi-locked state. The alarm would go off when I tried to lock the car and I couldnt open it either pressing the release handle. Pressing both buttons on the dash did finally open it though. It's now at the dealer (3 weeks of warranty left ) and they have diagnosed the release handle in the upper tailgate as faulty, not the cable or locking mechanism itself which I thought was the problem.
Good luck.

I had the same issue with the bottom tail gate switch. I opened the switch an cleaned out all the "copper sulfate" powder that caused the switch to latch [rather short out]. I totally agree that it is a switch failure.

Thanks Guys-
Dealer replaced the switch assembly this morning. I'm kicking myself for not asking for the old part back so I could repair it and put it on the shelf for when the warranty is up.
