Tailgate won't close

Hi All,

I've searched and searched on tailgate latch problems and there are a TON that address the problem of the tailgate upper portion failing to open. However, I'm having the opposite problem- it won't stay fully closed and I haven't found anyone sharing this particular problem.

Problem:
No matter how firmly I close the upper portion of the tailgate, it won't stay fully latched. It will catch on the first notch of the latch so I don't have to worry about it flying open completely, but it won't catch on the second notch and be fully shut. Hence, I get a Tailgate Open message on the dashboard cluster.

Taking it to the dealer tomorrow but before I waste the morning with doing so, thought I'd check here to see if anyone knows of an easy fix.

Best,
Dave

I had this experience some days ago, all of a sudden the upper tailgate wouldnt close properly, it got stuck in a semi-locked state. The alarm would go off when I tried to lock the car and I couldnt open it either pressing the release handle. Pressing both buttons on the dash did finally open it though. It's now at the dealer (3 weeks of warranty left Very Happy ) and they have diagnosed the release handle in the upper tailgate as faulty, not the cable or locking mechanism itself which I thought was the problem.

Good luck.

I had the same issue with the bottom tail gate switch. I opened the switch an cleaned out all the "copper sulfate" powder that caused the switch to latch [rather short out]. I totally agree that it is a switch failure.

Thanks Guys-

Dealer replaced the switch assembly this morning. I'm kicking myself for not asking for the old part back so I could repair it and put it on the shelf for when the warranty is up.
