Your friends website on his 6x6 Deafner is fascinating....
It is. They had a brilliant trip.
On a poignant but still fascinating note - they got caught in the Tsunami in Thailand.

The page starts with them enjoying thailand and you even see the pictures of them in the sea watching it rising, but followed by the tragic consequences.

hey guys, many thanks for the brilliant support. here's, in short, the most common FAQ:
Q: ok, but why LR discovery?
A: easy; style, comfort, 4x4 capability and when the weather turns bad, 2 people can sleep in it.
Q: how about the costs of such a journey?
A: well, we're going to 'rough-it-up' a little; wildcamping in certain places, cooking in the field and avoiding the congestion zone in London... the main expense will be shipping and - as we all know - fuel.
Q: what if you'll break down?
A: we definitely will. so we'll have to keep the spirit, use common sense and improvise a little.
Q: can I join???
A: absolutely. bring some nice tea for Jen, leave a small donation to charity and you're welcome. more details here: http://theworldusanddisco3.moonfruit.com/#/join-us/4544004222
thanks again for the great support and keep in touch 8)

hi Noam, all sounds fantastic and I wouldn't hesitate to wish you well.
Rays suggestion of the Overland shows, you'll probably get so much info from those on gear, hints tips etc. Haven't heard of too many D3's doing a round the world so you'll probably be breaking new ground yourself so that'll only add to the excitement
As for breakdowns - unavoidable like you said but maybe a Faultmate or similar would be a wise investment.
Good luck and will watch your blog with admiration A happy childhood ... is the worst possible preparation for life.

Isn't a simpler vehicle a safer bet? Maybe an old Disco1 or a Deafener. My friends went around the world in a converted 6x6 defender and they said they chose that for it's simplicity to fix.

Hei, Rob
V many thanks for this lead.
*Great Link to the 6WD Adventure;
*We Overlanded to, around, and back from, "Asiatic" / Anatolian, Turkey in the 60s in a Morris 1000 Industrial "variant". SIMPLICITY was the watch word, as you point out. Got to Lake Van, and Syrian border , but not up Nemrut Dagi ]
*Love my [recently new-2-me] D3 But will renew the "Warranty".

More thanks, Rob, for this sequence. Waiting for their: book / film / TV Series.
Palin Palls, set against this Pair. [Palin, M , not Palin, S ]
And the "Old" M'bikers' Moto still holds: Always stop and help others and make Mates, you'll need them in the future.
The Rocker Repair section was fascinating - again showing the depth of their support network!
Are they now running their own "Adventure" business?
Kind regards

Arghh I am getting sick with all the envy I feel right now!!! Now seriously best of luck, and if you return by Portugal, I will be happy to supply accomodation for you and drink away the storys you will certainly have to tell after such a long trip.
As for what you should consider doing/packing, the farthest away I have ever been in my Disco was Barcelona (1200 km drive) and the highest was our very own Serra da Estrela (roughly 2000 m high) so not a seasoned explorer miself.
Still my 2 cents:
For the Disco: Park Heater, 17" wheels, underbody protection, new belts all around, AC charged, 2 new batteries, CB radio, long range fuel tank, 6 new tires, roof rack, RAI, a good winch, sand tracks, an air jack, a direct line of compressed air from the valve block of the air suspension and a fridge.
For your confort: an air mattress (although the disco is quite fluffy and with a good sleeping bag it is not essential), electric boiler for the tea, power converter for charging 220v appliances, TV tuner or lots of movies and series in your laptop, flashlight, complete water resistant clothing and boots, good gloves, firesticks, a couple of canvas chairs, beer, ham, chips.. and more beer.
If something goes really wrong with the disco, you can always sell all the shiny bits and return in executive to the UK
Cheers,
Miguel
