tap-tap-tap tap-tap-tap tap-tap-tap

I was getting some electrical noise on my aux input, three taps and a short silence, repeated, overall frequency of the sequence is about 1 per second. What will there be in my D3 that produces 'noise' like that? Only happens when the engine is running, when it's off I got a high-pitched continuous tone instead.

I've stopped the noise by breaking the connecton between the ground from my sound source and the common ground on the aux input. The source is such that the ground for the sound signal is connected to the vehicle ground anyway.

you've got an earth loop, the noise will be comms pulses on CANbus The aux socket is earthed out when nothing connected to prevent this (hence the 4th wire) Wink

No, that's a different sound, more like squeak-squeak, squeak-squeak, squeak-squeak

the squeak-squeak noise is the EPB Rolling with laughter

the tap-tap is either the disco trying to tell you something in morse code or it's a pedestrian stuck under the bonnet trying to get out Laughing

the problem is lots of parallel wiring, to prevent inductive nose they need to cross power, data and audio at 90 degrees, or decouple them from 0V. Even screened cables are not immune from inductive interference if there are multiple earth paths

I think I might have created a lot of the problems for myself.... The custom audio install is a bit like a birds nest at this stage. Once I've proved it sort of works I'll take it all apart again and remove some of the loops.
