Temperature gauge fault

Hi all, new on here.
Would appreciate some advice on my disco 3.
On a cold start up and drive the temperature gauge goes nearly to the midway point then rapidly drops to cold, it does it a few times until full engine temperature is reached then it’s fine, no warning lights or rough running. Just wondered if the thermostat was at fault. Thanks in advance Lee

Could be, but is also linked to the oil temp sensor, so if that’s faulty, an also cause temp faults.
Look at live values. Thumbs Up

Thanks for that, I’ve read a few posts that suggest either oil sensor or temp sensor, but it’s Puzzling me as why it does it from a cold start and no other time. Could the thermostat be at fault? Being to slow to close thus letting to much cold coolant through

What Bodsy says mine did exactly the same, only when cold once up to temp it was fine.
You can change the sensor without draining the oil if you're quick Thumbs Up

Had the same on my V8. Changed all the sensors (3no)12 to 18months ago but I had the problem occur recently. Tale tell sign is the fan kicking in, look down and the temp gauge is not reading.

It so infrequent on mine that I'm unable to trace (twice in 8,000miles) . Plus switching the ignition off and on and its gone.
