Temperature Gauge Intermittent Fault |
|
I've just bought my D3 a couple of weeks back. In the last couple of days, the temperature gauge has started to play up. Its reading around the cold mark most of the time but every now and then it starts working and climbs back to around half way. I think the sensor is on the top hose coming out of the radiator? Maybe someone can confirm this?
I have also heard the oil temperature sensor can cause this although after fiddling with the wires going into the sensor on the top hose, it seemed to start working again for a period of time after being off for a while previously.
Am I on the right track? I notice many members on here use a fault code reader. How necessary are they and where do I find out about them from?

If you disconnect the connector to the sensor on the top hose, then the temp gauge will go all the way to the top, shoing overheating.. I bet its the oil temp sensor that needs replacing. If you do not have a diagnostic tool that can read live values of Engine oil temp and engine coolant temp, then start with replacing the oil temp sensor in the sump of the engine.
I have seen this before.. the temg gauge starts rising, then it just drops to the bottom and it stays there for a while before it climbs back up and fall back to stone cold..
I bet of you can get oil temp sensor reading it will show -18c ish..

Thanks for the advice. I will take a look underneath to see if the oil temperature sensor looks like a job I can do myself and if so I'll get the sensor and try it. I'll update the thread when I've done it.

In my case it was the oil temp sensor. Thank so much to this forum.
Replacement is easy, however you have to drain the oil, I used a plastic container and reused the oil as I changed it some thousand km ago.

Mine did that, it was the water sensor, cheap and easy to replace, no need to drain anything either
The sensor had disintegrated inside but looked normal from outside. Joined the BMWX5 45e group

Stupid question but I seem to be having the same issue with my temp gauge
Assuming it is a sensor issue is it still ok for SWMBO to drive ?
Especially with the current weather situation
Many thanks
