In the good old days I believe some added sawdust to their oil ….. especially dodgy car dealers.
Helped deaden the knocks & rattles.

However, don’t think that should be an option today!

I remember buying a Ford Anglia, first time I tried to top the engine oil up I couldn’t get any oil in the oil filler pipe, I pulled an old sock out that the previous owner bunged in Big Cry
Those engines would do 28,000 miles maximum before needing a complete overhaul, crank regrind and rebore, just shows how much engine technology has advanced in a lifetime.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I used to run an old Lada just for fishing, climbing, whatever type trips.

When I did an oil change on my BMW I saved it to use in the Lada - bloody thing didn't care what was in it Laughing

I also used to retard the ignition and put in 3 or 4 gallons of paraffin per full tank to keep costs down ....

Then I downgraded and bought a Series IIa which brought a whole new world of pain Laughing
 I see no ships........

I have worked on many VW engines that use 5w30 oil many of them had oil related problems, Such as worn cams, failed turbos and bearing failures. Misubishi also used to use the VW engines but specified 5w40 oil and they never suffered with the same problems.

SIL builder by trade used to run a VW Caddy pick up, he only put oil in it when the oil light came on Shocked. service?- “waste of money just a money making racket” he would say. It had done over 150k miles when he parted with it because of a failed gb, I guess he never put oil in that as there was no warning light for it Whistle
