This failed me this week.

D3 went through it's [2nd] MOT with flying colours last Thurs.
But on Mon on a trip up the North East, just got through the Tyne Tunnel to visit a customer when I heard this metalic rumbling bearing noise.
Turned around and took it easy for the 80+ mile trip back [at around 55mph].
In garage that afternoon for inspection and repair.
The alternator tension pulley bearings had given in.
[there were no bearings left, just rotating metal against metal]
Looking at the damage, I think I was lucky getting it home in one piece.

£90 later it was all up and running, and as good as new again.
Thumbs Up

Did you get any other noise before it happened, such as a whirring sound.

I've got a high pitched squeeling sound from the front of the engine on a cold start, it goes away after a minute of so. Could mine be about to fail too?

Had no previous noises.
In fact going through the Tyne Tunnel - no noise.
Pulled up at the pay booth, window down,
chance for any noise to reverberate - nothing!
3 miles up the road, pulled alongside an industrial unit, window down.
Heard this clatter, thought it was a roller shutter being opened.
But when blipped throttle sound died down slightly.
So made my way gently home and to my local garage.

When I saw the part - the pulley was rotating on the spindle with no bearings, I was amazed I made it back.

Same kind noise in here, what could cause this? Just at first start of the day.

I had that high pitch squeeling noise on start up on my first D2 before the tensioner bearings went.

However had not choice but to nurse it back home (165 mile). . . Strange thing is the noise dissappeared and when I took it the garage this afternoon, could not get it to do it . . . Embarassed

I will call them tomorrow and get them to order the part as you have fitted as everthing sounds the same... However totally confused that its gone quiet again ???? but I reackon this will only be tempory so I'll get it changed ASAP...

As any half decent old school mechanic would know, squeeling from under the bonnet after first start only is typically attributable to a loose / worn alternator belt. Used to be shared with the cooling fan.

Typically a cold start takes a lot of ooomph from the battery to start the engine, meaning that as soon as the engine is started and running, and the alternator is producing charge that the alternator is going to be working extra hard to re charge the battery. This results in extra load to spin the alternator which can cause a cold rubber covered belt which a bit loose / worn to slip a bit. hence the squeel until the battery at least has a good part of its oomph replaced and the load dies off a bit.

Usually easily fixed with a re tension, replacement, or in the old days, (Showing my age now) a spray of belt dressing).

However as you may have noted a lot of usage of the word OLD in there, I would not have expected modern vehicle engines, such as the D3, to suffer from this, It should have pre sprung tensioners and better compounds in the belt make up to have long since eradicated this, and i know from my dealings in the D3 electronics that demand from the alternator is now controlled electronically to compensate for temperature and other heavy loads, so perhaps the symptom might indeed be something more like drag of the belt on a failing tensioner pulley.

I know if i heard it on my D3 i would not be blowing the dust off a can of belt dressing as my first reaction.
And having seen the pictures above, i would certainly be checking my pulleys.

My D3 was just out of the dealers a few weeks before.
Was having the turbo replaced.
I would have hoped that any decent mechanic would have checked and noted any faults in the rebuild.
